Cougars Put Away Otters With Two Second-Half Goals

SEASIDE, Calif. – Two unanswered second-half goals led the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (5-4-2, 3-1-0) to a 2-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay (4-4-3, 1-2-1 CCAA) on Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB – 17' Grace Moeder (Unassisted)
CSUSM – 49' Jenna Frankina (Assisted by Sierra Moore)
CSUSM – 72' Claire Hernandez (Assisted by Diana Mendoza)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Otters struck first in the 17th minute of play as Moeder put the ball into the left side of the net on a penalty kick.
  • After 45 minutes, the Cougars outshot the Otters by a 7-3 margin and were up 2-0 on corner kicks.
  • CSUSM evened the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Off a Moore free kick from about 30 yards out, Frankina headed the ball into the net from six yards out on the right side.
  • The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute. Off a corner kick from the left side by Mendoza, Hernandez headed the ball into the right side of the net to give CSUSM the go-ahead goal.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM heavily outshot CSUMB at 14-3, putting a season-high eight shots on goal.
  • The Cougars tallied five corner kicks.
  • Frankina and Hernandez each tallied their team-best second goal of the season while Frankina also led the game with three shots.
  • Moore's assist was her second of the season, and Mendoza's was her first.
  • The Cougars are now 5-1-1 when playing the Otters and are 2-1-1 when playing in Seaside.
  • This was CSUSM's first win in Seaside since 2016.
  • The last four games in the series have been decided by one goal.
  • The Cougars last started conference play at 3-1-0 in 2018.
