No. 4/5 CSUSM to End Road Trip at CPP, No. 5/10 CSUSB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 4/5 Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (12-0, 8-0 CCAA) will conclude a three-game road trip this week as it visits Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on No. 5/10 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM sneaked out an 87-85 victory at then-No. 4/5 Chico State last Thursday in battle of unbeaten teams.
  • Chico was the highest-ranked team CSUSM had ever defeated as an NCAA member, and it was the Cougars’ second win over a ranked team this season.
  • Jayce McCain led the way with a game-high 23 points in addition to a career-high eight rebounds.
  • This was CSUSM’s first win in Chico since Feb. 11, 2017.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM climbed to its highest-ever national ranking in both Division II polls on Tuesday. The Cougars came in at No. 4 in the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll while moving to No. 5 in the D2SIDA Top 25 National Media Poll.
  • The Cougars unanimously took the top spot in the D2SIDA West Region Poll with six first-place votes on Monday.
  • With CSUSM’s win over Chico, the Cougars are in sole possession of first place in the CCAA standings.
  • CSUSM is one of three remaining undefeated teams in Division II, joining No. 1/1 Lubbock Christian (16-0) and No. 3/3 Nova Southeastern (15-0).
  • The Cougars’ 12-game winning streak is the second-longest in program history and is the fifth-longest active winning streak in Division II.
  • CSUSM has the toughest remaining schedule among CCAA teams with opponents holding a .583 winning percentage.
  • Out of all West Region teams, the Cougars’ remaining schedule is the fifth toughest with four GNAC schools holding a tougher slate.
  • The Cougars have the nation’s best 3-point field-goal defense at 26.3%.
  • CSUSM has the third-best turnover margin in Division II at 7.5.
  • At 9.7 turnovers per game, the Cougars have the fifth-lowest average in the nation and have the sixth-fewest total turnovers at 116.
  • Outscoring opponents by 17.8 points per game, CSUSM has the eight-best scoring margin in the country.
  • The Cougars are holding are holding opponents to 62.6 points per game, ranking 11th in the nation for scoring defense.
  • CSUSM has shot a clutch 78.8% from the charity stripe this season – 11th best in Division II.
  • The Cougars are averaging the 14th-most steals per game nationally at 9.8.
  • Forcing 17.17 turnovers per game, CSUSM ranks 17th in Division II.
  • With an assist-turnover ratio of 1.40, the Cougars come in at 27th nationally and lead the CCAA.
  • CSUSM’s scoring offense of 80.3 points per game ranks second in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars’ field-goal percentage of 46.3% ranks third in the conference.
  • Jayce McCain continues to have the nation’s best free-throw percentage at 97.3% (36-of-37).
  • McCain ranks third in the league for assist-turnover ratio (2.76), field-goal percentage (50.8%), steals per game (1.83) and total steals (22).
  • Blake Seits continues to be the Cougars’ leading scorer at 16.8 points per game, ranking fifth in the CCAA. McCain is eighth in the league with 15.2 points per game.

THURSDAY NIGHT AT POMONA

  • CPP went 1-1 on the road last week with a 91-85 loss in overtime against Sonoma State before tallying an 87-67 win against Humboldt State.
  • The Broncos are 2-3 in their last five games with three games canceled due to COVID health and safety measures.
  • CPP is 1-2 against ranked opponents this season.
  • The Broncos currently sit seventh in the CCAA standings with a .429 winning percentage in conference play.
  • CPP is 4-1 in home games this season with the lone loss coming against then-No. 8 Chico State on Dec. 4.
  • Thursday will be the Broncos’ first home game since that loss to Chico.
  • CPP is recording the 12th-most steals per game in Division II at 9.8 while also ranking 12th for offensive rebounds per game at 13.82.
  • The Broncos have the second-best rebound margin in the CCAA at 4.1.

  • Phoenix Shackelford is the CCAA’s leader for steals per game at 2.18 and has the second-best scoring average in the league at 17.5 points per game.
  • In the all-time series, CSUSM is 3-6 against CPP and is 2-3 in games taking place in Pomona.

SATURDAY AT NO. 5/10 CSUSB

  • The Coyotes upped their winning streak to seven games last week with an 83-62 win at Humboldt State and a 94-74 win at Sonoma State.
  • CSUSB was scheduled to play Cal State LA on Thursday, but COVID health safety measures within the Golden Eagles’ program forced the game to be ruled a no contest.
  • The Coyotes have won their last three games by at least 20 points.
  • CSUSB is 6-1 at home this season with the lone loss coming against Chico State on Dec. 2.
  • The Coyotes are currently second in the CCAA standings with a .875 winning percentage and rank third in the D2SIDA West Region Poll.
  • CSUSB is the nation’s fifth-best rebounding team with 43.29 boards per game and is coming down with the third-most defensive rebounds at 30.79 per game.
  • On average, the Coyotes are outrebounding opponents by 10.1 per game ­– the sixth-best margin in Division II.
  • San Bernardino is scoring the sixth-most points per game in the nation at 89.6.
  • The Coyotes are shooting 49.5% from the field this season, leading the CCAA and ranking 22nd nationally.
  • CSUSB is dishing out 16.9 assists per contest to lead the conference.
  • Daytone Jennings has the ninth-most double-double performances in Division II with eight while leading the conference with 9.9 rebounds per game.
  • Brandon Knapper leads the CCAA in points per game (21.9), total field goals made (97) and total 3-point field goals made (46).
  • CSUSM is 2-5 in the all-time series against CSUSB and is winless in three games in San Bernardino.
  • The Coyotes have won the last five games in the series with the Cougars’ last victory coming on Nov. 20, 2016.

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 71-54 (.568).
