CSUSM to Open Home Schedule Against La Verne, Biola

SAN MARCOS, Calif. Cal State San Marcos women’s soccer will open its home schedule beginning on Thursday at 4 p.m. against NCAA Division III’s La Verne and on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Biola.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM opened its 2021 season with a 1-0 overtime victory against CCAA foe Cal State Dominguez Hill in a non-conference matchup this past Sunday.
  • After a scoreless 90 minutes, redshirt sophomore Sierra Moore scored the golden goal in extra time on a free kick from 15 yards outside of the box.
  • The goal was the first of Moore’s career at CSUSM.
  • The Cougars advanced to 10-2-3 all-time in season openers and remain undefeated in the NCAA Division II era.
  • Three of the last four overtime wins for CSUSM have occurred with a free-kick goal.

HOME OPENER AGAINST LA VERNE

  • The Cougars will play their home opener on Thursday by hosting NCAA Division III’s La Verne.
  • CSUSM has won all three games against La Verne in the all-time series and is 2-0 against the Leopards in San Marcos.
  • This will be the first game between the Cougars and Leopards since 2011 in San Marcos.
  • CSUSM has won all three contests in the series by at least two goals and has never conceded a goal to La Verne.
  • The Leopards are 0-2 to begin their 2021 season with a pair of 2-0 losses to Occidental and Redlands last week.
  • Thursday’s game against CSUSM is La Verne’s lone non-Division III game of the 2021 season.
  • The Leopards did not play any games in 2020 and went 3-12-1 in 2019.

SATURDAY AGAINST BIOLA

  • CSUSM will wrap up the week by hosting Biola on Saturday.
  • The Cougars are 3-5-4 in the all-time series against the Eagles and are 1-1-3 when playing in San Marcos.
  • CSUSM’s last victory against Biola occurred in 2014 in San Marcos.
  • The last two meetings between the Cougars and Eagles ended in ties of 1-1 and 0-0.
  • Biola is 1-1 to begin the 2021 season after a 1-0 win against Stanislaus State in the season opener last week and a 3-1 loss to Chico State on Monday
  • Abby Chavez and Sarah Freed have both of Biola’s goals this season.
  • The Eagles allowed 15 shots with 11 shots on goal and eight corner kicks against Chico State.
  • CSUSM is one of five CCAA opponents Biola is playing in non-conference play this season with the others being Stanislaus State, Chico State, Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Biola played a condensed 2020 schedule in the spring of this year and went 2-2.
  • In the 2021 PacWest Preseason Coaches Poll, Biola was voted to finish fourth in the conference standings while junior midfielder Katelyn Penner was selected to the Preseason All-PacWest Team.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has 12 returners from its 2019 squad, including Hannah Arcala who tallied one goal and a team-leading 28 shots.
  • With 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform on the field for the first time.
  • The Cougars tied for eighth in the 2021 CCAA Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll with Cal State Monterey Bay.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his eighth year in charge of the women's program and 16th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 41-38-25 (.514) for his career with the Cougars.
