Early Goals Lead to Shutout of CSUSM at No. 14 Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – Three early goals in the first 23 minutes led to the defeat of the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team at the hands of No. 14 Azusa Pacific by a score of 3-0 at the Cougar Soccer Complex on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the second minute of the contest, APU took an early 1-0 lead. In heavy traffic, Gomes made a short pass back to Diep, who sent the ball into the back left corner of the net from outside of the box on the top right side.
  • APU went up 2-0 in the 16th minute. After a shot was deflected to the bottom left side of the box, Medeiros made a short pass to Gomes. Just in front of the keeper, Gomes put the one-touch ball into the top right corner of the net.
  • Just into the 23rd minute, a shot from the far-right side by APU's Jonah Peck was saved by CSUSM's Jesus Mentado, but Diep picked up the rebound 10 yards out and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to give APU a 3-0 lead.
  • CSUSM had a great opportunity in the 54th minute as Aaron Alvarez intercepted an APU pass just outside the top of the box. With one defender to beat, Alvarez took a shot from the point of interception, but the shot went wide left.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM falls to 0-2-0 while APU improves to 2-0-0.
  • APU held possession for 65% of the game and outshot CSUSM 18-8 with a 7-3 advantage for shots on goal.
  • Alvarez led all CSUSM players with three shots.
  • CSUSM is now 1-6 in the all-time series against APU and remains winless in Azusa.
  • This is the first time since 2016 that CSUSM has started a season at 0-2-0.

CSUSM will continue non-conference play next Saturday by heading north to Fresno Pacific. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ramirez Field.
