Cougars Set for CCAA Play at Humboldt, No. 25 Chico

SAN MARCOS, Calif. Looking to begin CCAA play on a strong note, the Cal State San Marcos women’s soccer team (4-0-0) will travel to Humboldt State (3-2-2) for a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday before squaring off at No. 25 Chico State (4-1-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars capped off non-conference play with a 2-0 defeat of CCAA foe Cal State San Bernardino to remain undefeated.
  • Hunter Morton posted both goals for the Cougars in her 34 minutes off the bench.
  • Cougar keeper Allison Marcure recorded her third shutout of the season.
  • The win was CSUSM’s fourth straight against CSUSB.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • At 4-0-0, CSUSM is one of nine teams in Division II with a perfect win-loss-tied percentage.
  • The Cougars’ goals-against average of .245 ranks first in the CCAA and third in Division II, while keeper Allison Marcure ranks seventh nationally in this category.
  • CSUSM’s shutout percentage of .750 ranks first in the conference and sixth nationally.
  • Marcure’s save percentage of .923 leads the CCAA and ranks 10th nationally.
  • Sierra Moore’s assists per game average of .50 ranks third in the conference and ranks 40th nationally.
  • This is just the second time in program history that CSUSM has started a season with four consecutive wins, the last being in 2011.
  • The Cougars are currently ranked eighth in the West Region.

BEGINNING CCAA PLAY AT HUMBOLDT

  • CSUSM is 2-1-2 in the all-time series against HSU and is 1-0-1 in Arcata.
  • The Lumberjacks took the last game in the series with a 2-1 win in San Marcos in 2019.
  • CSUSM’s lone win in Arcata occurred in 2017 as the Cougars came away with a 1-0 victory.
  • A win over HSU would put CSUSM at 5-0-0 for the first time in program history.
  • HSU posted a 1-1 tie in its last game at Chico State.
  • The Lumberjacks’ scoring offense of 1.43 goals per game ranks seventh in the CCAA.
  • On the defensive side, HSU has the third-highest save percentage in the conference and ranks 35th nationally at .857.
  • Both Kendal Spencer and Clara Lenihan lead the Lumberjacks’ offense with three goals each.

WRAPPING UP THE WEEKEND AT NO. 25 CHICO

  • The Cougars will get their first taste of Top 25 action on Sunday at Chico State after the Wildcats snuck into this week’s coaches poll with its tie against HSU.
  • CSUSM owns a 3-2-1 lead in the all-time series against Chico, but is winless in Chico at 0-2-1.
  • In 2019, the Cougars’ came away with a 1-0 win in overtime against the Wildcats.
  • All games in the series have been decided by one goal or fewer.
  • Chico’s average margin of victory is 2.5 goals in large part to a 10-0 victory against Holy Names earlier this season.
  • Susanna Garcia and Madison Parsons both lead the team and CCAA with four goals each.
  • Defensively, the Wildcats’ save percentage of .773 ranks seventh in the conference.
  • A win against Chico would be CSUSM’s first victory over a ranked opponent since taking down No. 1 UC San Diego in 2018, and it would be the Cougars’ first-ever win against a ranked opponent on the road.
  • The Wildcats were picked to finish fifth in the 2021 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has 12 returners from its 2019 squad, including Hannah Arcala who tallied one goal and a team-leading 28 shots.
  • With 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform on the field for the first time.
  • The Cougars tied for eighth in the 2021 CCAA Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll with Cal State Monterey Bay and Humboldt State.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his eighth year in charge of the women's program and 16th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 45-38-25 (.532) for his career with the Cougars.
