No. 23/18 CSUSM to Play First Road Games at CSUMB, SF State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 23/18 Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (7-0, 3-0 CCAA) will hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to Cal State Monterey Bay (3-2, 2-0 CCAA) for a 7:30 p.m. game on Thursday before concluding the weekend at San Francisco State (3-5, 1-1 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM continued its winning ways this past weekend with a 79-41 win against Cal State Dominguez Hills before edging out an 84-82 victory over Cal State East Bay.
  • The Cougars victory over the Toros was the team’s second 38-point victory in three games while leading for all but 11 seconds.
  • CSUSM’s win over the Pioneers set a new team record for consecutive home victories in the Division II era at seven. The win also put the Cougars at 3-0 in CCAA play – a first for the team.
  • Jayce McCain posted a career-best 30 points against East Bay while going 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.

  • CSUSM made its first-ever appearance in the NABC Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll at No. 23 while moving up to No. 18 in D2SIDA Top 25 National Media Poll on Tuesday.
  • The Cougars moved up to No. 2 in the D2SIDA West Region Poll.
  • CSUSM is one of 14 teams in Division II without a loss this season, including CCAA foe Chico State.
  • The Cougars’ seven-game winning streak is tied for the eighth longest in Division II.
  • CSUSM’s turnover margin of 8.4 and free-throw percentage of 83.2% both rank fourth nationally.
  • At 10.9 steals per game, CSUSM is sixth in Division II.
  • The Cougars are holding opponents to 26.6% from beyond the arc – 11th best in the nation.

FIRST ROAD GAME AT MONTEREY

  • The Otters come into the Thursday’s contest with back-to-back road wins to begin CCAA play.
  • Monterey posted a 75-50 win at Sonoma State last Thursday before tallying a 77-74 win in overtime at Humboldt State.
  • The Cougars will be the Otters’ first game against a ranked opponent this season.
  • The Otters have the nation’s best 3-point field-goal defense as opponents are shooting just 24.4%.
  • Averaging 43.2 rebounds per game, Monterey is posting the 11th most in Division II.

  • The Gators’ best statistical ranking on a national level is their 3-point field-goal defense of 27.9% ranking 22nd.
  • SF State ranks dead last in the CCAA for assist-turnover ratio (.75) and turnovers per game (16.9).
  • The Gators have the second-worst 3-point shooting team in the conference at 28.6%.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 66-54 (.5450).
