RV/No. 22 Cougars Conclude Seven-Game Homestand This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/No.22 Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (5-0, 1-0 CCAA) will wrap up a seven-game homestand it began the season with when it faces Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-3, 1-0 CCAA) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Cal State East Bay (2-5, 0-1 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m. at The Sports Center.

On Saturday, the CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will hold a toy drive benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos. All fans in attendance who bring one new, unwrapped and still-in-the-box toy will receive free admission.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars were not feeling the effects of Turkey Day as they defeated Cal State LA 76-65 to begin CCAA play this past Saturday.
  • Greg Milton III led CSUSM with a season-best 18 points to go along with six rebounds.
  • Blake Seits tallied his first double-double as a Cougar with 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars became nationally ranked for the first time as an NCAA member on Tuesday as CSUSM was ranked No. 22 in the D2SIDA Top 25 National Media Poll.
  • CSUSM received votes in the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week. The Cougars received the third-most points among teams just outside the Top 25.
  • CSUSM moved up one spot to No. 3 in the D2SIDA West Region Poll on Monday.
  • CSUSM’s turnover margin of 8.2 ranks eighth in the nation and leads the CCAA.
  • Hitting 81.9% of its free throws, the Cougars have the nation’s 10th-best free-throw percentage and lead the conference. Opponents are only hitting 51.3% of free throws against the Cougars – the worst percentage against a CCAA school.
  • CSUSM has the 15th-best scoring defense in all of Division II at 60.8 points allowed per game – second best in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars are holding opponents to 25.9% from three this season – 17th best nationally and the best in the CCAA.
  • At 10.8 steals per game, CSUSM ranks 15th nationally and is tied with Cal Poly Pomona for the most in the CCAA.
  • CSUSM’s 10 turnovers per game rank 18th in Division II and lead the league.
  • The Cougars are forcing 18.2 turnovers per game – 18th-best in the nation and second best in the conference.
  • Beating the opposition by an average of 17.4 points per game, CSUSM has the 28th-highest scoring margin in Division II and the highest in the CCAA.
  • CSUSM has tallied the 33rd-fewest turnovers in the nation with 50 – second fewest in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars’ assist-turnover ratio of 1.18 ranks second in the conference.
  • CSUSM has the third-best scoring offense in the league at 78.2 points per game.
  • The Cougars have the fourth-best field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 45.1%.
  • Jayce McCain has the best field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 58.9% while also leading the league with 2.6 steals per game.
  • Seits in the second-leading scorer in the league with 19.2 points per game.
  • The Cougars’ program-best two turnovers against Point Loma are still the fewest by a Division II program this season.

THURSDAY AGAINST THE TOROS

  • Thursday will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the Cougars and Toros dating back to New Year’s Eve of 2015.
  • CSUSM will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak against CSUDH with two of those losses occurring at The Sports Center.
  • The Cougars are 4-5 in the all-time series against the Toros.
  • In the lone contest between CSUSM and CSUDH in 2019-20, the Toros came away with a 107-105 win in double overtime.
  • The Cougars are 2-3 against the Toros when playing at The Sports Center.
  • CSUDH began CCAA play by winning 69-62 at Cal State East Bay this past Saturday.
  • Prior to their CCAA opener, the Toros had back-to-back losses against Fresno Pacific and Concordia University Irvine.
  • In its three losses, CSUDH has lost by an average of 6.33 points per game.

2021 HOME FINALE AGAINST THE PIONEERS

  • Saturday’s game against CSUEB will wrap up both a seven-game homestand for the Cougars and will be CSUSM’s final home game of the calendar year.
  • The Pioneers have had a rough go of it to begin the 2021-22 season with a 2-5 record and are currently on a three-game losing streak.
  • Against common opponents, the Pioneers lost by 17 to Point Loma and by six against Saint Martin’s.
  • CSUEB will play at Cal State LA on Thursday before trekking down to San Marcos.
  • CSUSM is 8-2 in the all-time series against CSUEB and are a perfect 5-0 against the Pioneers at home.
  • After the Cougars began the series with six straight wins, CSUSM and CSUEB have split the season series in the last two seasons of competition – each winning on their home floor.
  • The Pios have jacked up the 12th-most 3-point attempts in the nation with 201 and have made the 20th-most at 69.
  • CSUEB has the top assist-turnover ratio in the CCAA at 1.33.
  • Allowing opponents to shoot 45% from the field, the Pioneers have the worst field-goal percentage defense in the conference.
  • East Bay is also allowing teams to hit 36% of attempted 3-pointers this season – second worst in the CCAA.
  • At 76.9 points allowed per game, the Pioneers have the second-worst scoring defense in the league.
  • CSUEB’s scoring offense ranks fourth in the conference at 73.6 points per game.
  • The Pioneers have two players scoring double figures in Zafir Williams (15.3) and Kaito Williams (11.1).
  • Jesse Galloway leads the league with an assist-turnover ratio of 4.6.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 64-54 (.542).
