Undefeated Cougars Beat LA to Start CCAA Play, 76-65

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/RV Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (5-0, 1-0 CCAA) began conference play with a 76-65 win over Cal State LA (2-4, 0-1 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A McCain 3-pointer put CSUSM up 11-8 in the opening four minutes of play.
  • Both teams took turns being on top with seven lead changes and four ties in the next eight minutes.
  • A pair of made free throws by Milton at 5:31 got things rolling for CSUSM as the Cougars closed out the first half on a 17-7 run to make it 40-31.
  • CSUSM registered six steals and forced 10 CSULA turnovers in the first half.
  • The Cougars outshot the Golden Eagles 41.7% (15-of-36) to 40.7% (11-of-27) in the first 20 minutes.
  • The Cougars wasted no time in the second half as Milton and Nesby each scored on fast breaks to put CSUSM up 44-31 in the first 40 seconds.
  • CSULA's Lyrik Shreiner knocked out a pull-up 3-pointer at 11:26 to cut CSUSM's lead to 52-46.
  • CSUSM never relinquished the lead during CSULA's runs and a Nesby 3-pointer gave the Cougars a 10-point cushion once again at 68-58 with five minutes remaining.
  • Both teams shot exactly 40% in the second half.

FAST BREAKS
  • At 5-0, CSUSM continued its best start to a season in the Division II era (2015-present).
  • Milton tallied a season-best 18 points for CSUSM.
  • Seits recorded a career-best 12 rebounds while recording his first double-double as a Cougar.
  • The Cougars led for 29:49 of the game and the Golden Eagles were on top only in the first half for 6:53.
  • CSUSM ended the game shooting 40.9% (27-of-66) while CSULA came in at 40.3% (25-of-62).
  • The Golden Eagles had the advantage on the boards at 43-38. CSUSM's total was a season high.
  • Nesby's two blocks were a career high.
  • McCain's five assists moved him into the top 10 for career assists at CSUSM. His total now stands at 111.
  • The Golden Eagles' Adrease Jackson had a team-high 17 points.
