Cougars Clinch CCAA Tournament Berth, Fall at SF State

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team dropped a five-set match (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 8-15) at San Francisco State on Friday night at The Swamp.

Despite the loss, the Cougars punched their fourth-consecutive ticket to the CCAA Tournament and is now fighting for the fifth seed in the tournament. CSUSM secured the spot after Stanislaus State fell Thursday night to No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes.
  • The Cougars took the lead on a Doering ace that sparked a three-point run to make it 17-14.  
  • The Gators charged back to even the set at 21-all, forcing CSUSM to take a timeout.
  • A SF State service error gave CSUSM the opening-set win at 25-23.
  • The turning point in the second set came at 15-15 when CSUSM went on a 5-0 run that included four SF State errors, an Emily Vander Weide kill and a block by the duo of Ridgeway and Kelli Miechowicz.
  • Ridgeway clinched the second-set win with a kill to put CSUSM up 2-0 in the match.
  • The Cougars led a majority of the third set, but SF State tied the score 10 times before snagging the win with back-to-back double blocks at 25-23.
  • Six unanswered points put the Gators up 11-7 in the fourth set.
  • CSUSM cut the SF State lead to 16-15 on a bad set by the Gators, but they responded with a 9-6 run the close out the set at 25-21 and to even the match at 2-2.  
  • CSUSM found itself down 6-2 in the fifth set.
  • The Cougars closed the gap at 9-6 on a Jackie Phillips ace.
  • The Gators won the set at 15-8 to match CSUSM"s come-from-behind victory on Sept. 18 at The Sports Center.
