CSUSM Falls in Five in Regular Season Finale at CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team dropped its second consecutive five-set match (23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-10) on Saturday night, falling to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in the regular-season finale.
 
Despite the loss, the Cougars previously clinched their fourth consecutive spot in the CCAA Tournament and will be the sixth seed. They will face third-seed San Francisco State in the opening round on Thursday, Nov. 18 in San Bernardino at 5 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took a quick 4-0 lead in the first set only to have the Otters rally back to even the set at 5-all.
  • The first set went on to feature eight tie scores and six lead changes.
  • Following a CSUSM timeout, Kelli Miechowicz got a kill and Doering notched a solo block to put CSUSM up 23-22.
  • The Cougars closed out the first set at 25-23 on an Emily Vander Weide kill.
  • CSUSM put together a large run in the middle of the second set to take a 16-9 with Cordero-Barr getting a kill off a block after covering a Cougar attacker.
  • The Cougars ended the second set on a 6-1 run to make it 25-16 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Attack errors haunted the Cougars in the third set, yet they still almost recorded the win.
  • A block by Turner and Adams evened the set at 23-all.
  • After a Cougar blocking error, the set was even again after an Otter serving error.
  • CSUMB notched off two more points to prevent a Cougar sweep with a 26-24 third-set win.
  • After going up 1-0 in the fourth set on a Doering kill, the teams tied the score six times before the Otters put together a 6-0 run.
  • CSUSM played catch up the remaining of the set, closing the gap to 23-19 before the Otters evened the match at 2-2 after a 25-20 fourth-set win.
  • The Cougars took a 2-1 lead early, but CSUMB knocked out a 7-1 run to pull away.
  • CSUSM closed the gap to 9-7 on Otter hitting error before CSUMB pulled away once again before claiming a 15-10 set win.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars concluded their regular-season schedule at 12-12 and 9-9 in CCAA play.
  • The Otters end their season with an overall record of 13-9 and 7-11 in conference action.
  • CSUSM has gone to five sets four times this season, tallying a win against San Francisco State at home on Sept. 18 before falling in five to Stan State (Oct. 2) and at SF State (Nov. 12).
  • The Cougars continue to lead the all-time series at 4-3 and are now 1-3 when playing in The Kelp Bed.
  • Adams collected her seventh double-double of the season, finishing the night with 14 kills and 10 digs.
  • With 40 assists and 15 digs, Turner recorded her 17th double-double of 2021.
