CSUSM Loses Heartbreaker Against Sonoma State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Allowing the game-winning goal in the waning seconds of its CCAA home opener, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer took a 3-2 loss to Sonoma State on Friday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 8th minute, SSU's Rohane passed the ball to Bernal-Santos on the left side of the field. Bernal-Santos proceeded to pass the ball into the middle of the box where Field took a shot off his right foot into the left side of the goal for the Seawolves' first goal of the day.
  • Receiving a cross-field pass from Diaz-Mendoza on the right side, Bernal-Santos passed a one-touch ball to Rohane at the top of the box. Rohane took a straight shot into the left side of the goal to give SSU a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute.
  • A long pass from near midfield by Corbin Thaete was headed in front of the SSU keeper into the left side of the goal by Martinez to cut CSUSM's deficit to 2-1 in the 33rd minute.
  • Taking control of the ball at near midfield, the Cougars' Patterson took a long drive with possession through the Seawolves' defense before finally taking a shot from just in front of the box. A motionless SSU keeper watched the ball sail into the bottom right corner of the goal as CSUSM knotted the game at 2-all in the 41st minute.
  • With just 17 seconds remaining in the second half and still tied at 2-2, Bernal-Santos made a pass from the top of the box to Rosales on the far right side of the box. Rosales sailed a pass to just in front of the CSUSM keeper where Rohane headed the ball off the right post before it ricocheted into the left side of the goal for the eventual SSU game-winner.

  • The Cougars fall to 1-7-1 (0-2-1 CCAA) on the year while SSU improves to 5-4-1 (1-1-1 CCAA). 
  • SSU held a 17-13 advantage for shots and a 7-5 advantage for shots on goal.
  • The Seawolves tallied six corner kicks to the Cougars' two.
  • Both goals by Martinez and Patterson were career firsts while Thaete's assist was the second of his career.
  • This was the Cougars' first two-goal game of the season.
  • CSUSM's 13 shots tied for their second most in a game this season while its five shots on goal were the second most for the year.
  • The Cougars are now 0-3-1 in the all-time series against the Seawolves.
