Cougars to Host No. 13 Sonoma State, San Francisco State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s soccer team (4-0-2, 0-0-2 CCAA) will return to The Cage to face No. 13 Sonoma State (7-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. before taking on San Francisco State (3-5-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM posted a pair of scoreless draws to begin CCAA play at Humboldt State and No. 25 Chico State.
  • Against the Wildcats on Sunday, Cougar keeper Allison Marcure’s 10 saves tied the program’s single-game record set by Jane Drury in 2007 against Mesa State College.
  • This was CSUSM’s first time beginning CCAA play with two scoreless ties.
  • This is the third time in program history that CSUSM has started a season without a loss in its first six games (2008, 2011), and it's the first time in the Division II era for the program.
  • CSUSM last started a season at 4-0-2 in 2008.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM has the top goals-against average in all of Division II at .153 while its shutout percentage of .833 also leads the nation.
  • In goals, Marcure’s .963 save percentage leads all of Division II while her goals-against average of .153 ranks second.
  • Marcure’s five shutouts on the year lead the CCAA and rank seventh nationally.
  • CSUSM’s win-loss-tie percentage of .833 ranks 22nd nationally.
  • The Cougars’ scoring margin of 1.16 ranks third in the CCAA.
  • In the opening weekend of conference play, CSUSM’s 14 saves led the league.

CCAA HOME OPENER

  • The Cougars will play their second consecutive game against a ranked opponent when No. 13 Sonoma State makes its way to The Cage on Friday.
  • CSUSM last played two consecutive games against ranked opponents in 2018 when it faced No. 24 Sonoma State and No. 1 UC San Diego.
  • Friday will mark the first game between CSUSM and SSU since 2018 as the 2019 game was cancelled due to the threat of wildfires in Northern California.
  • The Cougars are winless and scoreless in their three games against the Seawolves and are 0-2 against SSU at The Cage.
  • SSU has been ranked in all prior meetings against CSUSM.
  • The Seawolves come into Friday’s matchup on a four-game winning streak after starting CCAA play with a pair of 1-0 wins over Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA last weekend.
  • Molly Murphy is SSU’s top offensive player with a team-leading four goals and 11 points to go along with three assists.
  • The Seawolves’ goals-against average of .365 ranks ninth nationally.

ENDING THE WEEKEND AGAINST THE GATORS

  • CSUSM is 2-3-2 against SFSU in the all-time series and is 1-1-1 when playing in San Marcos.
  • In the Cougars’ last game against the Gators in 2019, CSUSM came out on top with a 2-1 victory at The Cage.
  • Last weekend, SFSU began CCAA play with a 0-0 tie against Cal State LA before chalking up a 2-1 victory against Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Katelyn Harper and Daesha Harper have led the Gators’ offense so far with three points each.
  • At .67 goals per game, SFSU’s scoring offense ranks 11th in the CCAA and 218th nationally.
  • The Gators’ save percentage also ranks 11th in the league and 225th in Division II.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has 12 returners from its 2019 squad, including Hannah Arcala who tallied one goal and a team-leading 28 shots.
  • With 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform on the field for the first time.
  • The Cougars tied for eighth in the 2021 CCAA Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll with Cal State Monterey Bay and Humboldt State.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his eighth year in charge of the women's program and 16th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 45-38-27 (.532) for his career with the Cougars.
