Cougars Host CCAA Championships

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  Cal State San Marcos will host the 2021 CCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday on its new Championship Course on campus. The women's 6K race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 10 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place shortly after at approximately 11:15 a.m.

 CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP BREAKDOWN

  • Cal State San Marcos will be hosting the conference championships for the first since joining the CCAA in 2015.
  • The races will be held on campus with the start and finish at Mangrum Track & Field.
  • Chico State has won 18 consecutive CCAA Championships dating back to 2002.
  • Joshua Litwiller was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA individual champion in cross country.
  • As a team, CSUSM placed second with 72 points at the 2019 CCAA Championships behind the Wildcats for Chico State, who finished with 23 points.
  • CSUSM's top runner of 2021, Shea Vavra, placed 12th in the 2019 race.
  • Vavra won the Cougar Challenge on the same course almost a month ago.

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The Cougars return 13 runners from the 2019 season.
  • Six runners will be donning Cougar Blue this season with Maria Texis being the lone true freshman.
  • CSUSM placed sixth at the 2019 CCAA Championships and eighth at the NCAA West Regional.
  • The Cougars were picked fifth in the CCAA Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • In the latest NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country West Region Rankings, as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA), the Cougars are ranked No. 8. Chico State (CCAA) remains on top, followed by Western Washington (GNAC) and Simon Fraser (GNAC). No. 6 Stanislaus State is the only other CCAA school ranked above CSUSM.

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In his first two seasons at the helm of the men's and women's cross country programs, the men's team claimed second in back-to-back appearances of the CCAA Championships while the women earned third and sixth.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
