Cougars Head to LA Before Home Game Against CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s soccer team (5-1-2, 1-1-2 CCAA) will play at Cal State LA (1-7-2, 1-2-1 CCAA) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. before returning to The Cage to face Cal Poly Pomona (4-4-2, 0-2-2 CCAA) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars went 1-1 last weekend with a 2-0 loss to No. 13 Sonoma State on Friday before earning a 1-0 win against San Francisco State on Sunday.
  • Cougar keeper Allison Marcure posted her sixth shutout of the season – tying her for the seventh most in a single season at CSUSM.
  • This was the first time since 2011 that CSUSM has recorded six shutouts in its first eight games.
  • Scoring their ninth goal of the season on Sunday, the Cougars have now scored more goals than they did in all of the 2019 season.
  • CSUSM moved into a tie for sixth place in the CCAA standings with five points.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM has the second-best save percentage in all of Division II at .923.
  • The Cougars’ shutout percentage of .750 ranks fifth nationally while their goals-against average of .352 comes in at No. 7.
  • With the same numbers above, Marcure leads the conference in all categories while ranking fourth nationally in save percentage and ninth in goals-against average.
  • In conference play, Marcure leads the league in both saves (24) and saves per game (6.0).

THURSDAY IN LOS ANGELES

  • After winless start in its first nine games, CSULA finally picked up a 2-1 win against Stanislaus State on Sunday.
  • Prior to the win, the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 loss to Cal State East Bay on Friday.
  • CSUSM and CSULA are knotted up at 3-3 in the all-time series with neither side winning on the road.
  • This will be the first meeting between the Cougars and Golden Eagles since 2018 when CSUSM pulled out a 3-2 win at The Cage.
  • The 2019 meeting was canceled due to poor air quality from wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
  • Out of 254 Division II teams, the Golden Eagles rank 230th and last in the CCAA at .60 goals per game.
  • CSULA ranks fifth in the conference for saves per game at 3.80.
  • The Golden Eagles have been shut out six times this season.
  • Irma Pinzon leads CSULA with two goals and four points on 20 shots.

SUNDAY AT HOME AGAINST CAL POLY POMONA

  • The Broncos are winless in CCAA play so far at 0-2-2 with only one goal scored.
  • CPP had a couple of scoreless draws against Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay last weekend at home.
  • The Broncos will finish up a three-game homestand against Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday.
  • CSUSM is 2-3-3 in the all-time series against CPP and is 2-3 when playing the Broncos in San Marcos.
  • The Cougars’ last win against the Broncos came in 2015.
  • CPP’s 2.0 saves per game are dead last in the CCAA and rank 251st nationally.
  • Taylor Scott leads the conference in points per game at 1.20 and total points at 12.
  • Scott is one of seven players in the CCAA tied for the most goals with four and is tied with Chico State’s Natalie Mendoza for the most assists with four.
  • The Broncos were picked to finish second in the 2021 CCAA Preseason Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has 12 returners from its 2019 squad, including Hannah Arcala who tallied one goal and a team-leading 28 shots.
  • With 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform on the field for the first time.
  • The Cougars tied for eighth in the 2021 CCAA Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll with Cal State Monterey Bay and Humboldt State.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his eighth year in charge of the women's program and 16th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 46-39-27 (.531) for his career with the Cougars.
