CSUSM Concludes Season Against No. 4/3 UC San Diego

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team closed out its 2019-20 season with a 99-86 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) loss to No. 4/3 UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Marcus Brown 3-pointer gave CSUSM a 15-12 lead with 14:52 on the clock in the first half.
  • UCSD claimed the lead with back-to-back 3-pointers by Christian Oshita and Gabe Hadley to go up 18-15 at 12:47.
  • CSUSM retook the lead at 21-20 on a driving layup by McCain with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
  • The Cougars kept the game within five points, even making it a one-point game on Brown's jumper at 6:51 to make it 34-33.
  • The Tritons went on a 19-9 run to close out the first half and took a 50-42 lead into the locker room.
  • In the first half, CSUSM shot 52.9% (18-of-34) from the field while the Tritons turned in a performance of 61.3% (19-of-31).
  • UCSD took its largest lead of the game at 97-77 with 2:11 remaining in the game.
  • CSUSM was outscored in the second half 49-44 as the Cougars recorded 14 fast breaks to UCSD's zero.
  • The final bucket of the game was a 3-pointer by Alec Frank, CSUSM's first four-year member of the men's basketball team.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM ends the season with a mark of 12-16 (8-14 CCAA) while the Tritons (27-1, 21-1 CCAA) enter next week as the top seed in the CCAA tournament.
  • The Cougars tied their fifth-highest point total of the season.
  • CSUSM shot their highest field-goal percentage against a NCAA Division II team this season at 55.4% (7-of-16), second to 64.2% against NAIA's San Diego Christian.
  • The Cougars matched their second-lowest turnover performance of the season, committing only seven.

  • The Cougars end their season tied for eighth in the CCAA standings.
  • Prior to the game, seniors Darae Elliott, Alec Frank and Khalil Fuller were honored as part of the Senior Day festivites.
