Strong Pitching Leads to Cougars Split on Opening Day

IRVINE, Calif. – On the opening day of the 2020 season, the Cal State San Marcos softball team tossed 12 shutout innings to finish with a split. The Cougars recorded a 6-1 victory over Western Washington before falling to No. 10 Concordia Irvine 1-0 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got on the board with four runs in the third, tallying three singles and a bases-loaded walk while taking advantage of two CUI errors.
  • Wood hit a 2-out double to pad CSUSM's lead to 6-0.
  • The Vikings knocked out their first hits of the game in the bottom of the first, registering one run on three hits before Ballen got the final out on a fly ball to right field.
 
QUICK HITS
  • In her collegiate debut, Ballen recorded a win in the circle after going into the seventh inning with a no-hitter.
  • This was CSUSM's seventh season-opening victory in the program's 14 seasons.
  • The Cougars scattered their eight hits while WWU was limited to just three hits.
  • With the win, CSUSM takes a 1-0 lead in the all-time series against Western Washington.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After six scoreless innings, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh after Sydney Sprinkle led off with a double to left field. Pinch runner Myka Hughes later scored on a bunt single by Amanda Gjertsen.
  • Lombardi and Wood each hit leadoff doubles in the second and fourth, respectively, but were both left stranded on the bases.

  • The Cougars ended the day with a 1-1 record.
  • In her first game wearing Cougar Blue, Ponce tossed six shutout innings.

"Great way to come out swinging on opening day. Zoe and Jamie were fantastic in the circle and we had some clutch hits. The Concordia game was a heartbreaker, but the team has a lot of fighting tenacity. We're looking forward to coming out tomorrow to battle for two more games."
