No. 24/16 CSUSM Drops Heartbreaker Against CCAA Leader CSUEB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 24/16 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team fell 65-61 to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) leader Cal State East Bay on Thursday night at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams were knotted at 16-16 at the end of the first quarter.
  • After a 12-4 CSUEB run to start the second quarter, the Cougars held the Pioneers scoreless in the final three minutes and 45 seconds to cut their deficit to 30-28 at halftime.
  • A Buckner 3-pointer put CSUSM back on top at 31-30 with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter.
  • CSUSM held the Pioneer scoreless for over 10 minutes until a 3-pointer by Mina Tameliau at the 3:30 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Cougars outscored CSUEB 22-5 in the third quarter to take a 50-35 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • CSUSM took its largest lead of the game at 54-39 on a Forel layup at 7:55 in the fourth quarter.
  • The Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to cut CSUSM's lead to 56-51 at the 4:46 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • A short jumper by CSUEB's Madison Schiller at 2:42 made it a three-point ballgame with CSUSM up 58-55.
  • A Schiller 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining gave East Bay its first lead (62-61) since the 8:32 mark of the third quarter.
  • A Hackson turn-around jumper to tie with seconds remaining made one full rotation on the rim before spiraling out.  
  • The Pioneers outscored CSUSM 30-11 in the final quarter.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars drop to 10-2 (5-2 CCAA) while the Pioneers improve to 11-3 (7-1 CCAA).
  • CSUSM led for 27:19 of the game while CSUEB was on top for only 11:53.
  • There were only three lead changes and one tie for the entire game.
  • The Pioneers outrebounded the Cougars, 45-29, with CSUEB collecting 17 offensive boards to the Cougars' seven.
  • Vermillion's 22-point performance is the fifth time this season she has scored 20 or more in a game.

The Cougars return to the court on Saturday to host Cal State Monterey Bay in The Sports Center at 1 p.m.
