Cougars Claw Back to Win in Double Overtime, 2-1

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In a double-overtime thriller, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 victory over Hawai'I Hilo on Wednesday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After being fouled by CSUSM keeper Justin Tesar in the box, UHH's Jorge Martinez put the Vulcans up 1-0 in the 14th minute with a penalty kick goal into the left side of the net.
  • Off a pass from just outside the right side of the box by Williamson, Salazar put a shot into the middle of the net in the 79th minute to knot the game at 1-1.
  • After a behind-the-back pass from Alvarez just in front of the box, Salazar put the game away with a shot into the right side of the net from the left side in the 105th minute.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM improves to 2-3 on the season while UHH drops to 0-1.
  • Salazar is the second Cougar to post two goals in a game this season as Williamson scored a pair in the season opener against Fresno Pacific.
  • Salazar's 16 shots set a single-game record at CSUSM. The previous record was 11 by Curtis Marcikic in 2007 against the University of Mary.
  • His seven shots on goal and two goals were both career highs.
  • The Cougars' 27 shots, 12 shots on goal, six saves and seven corner kicks were all season highs.
  • CSUSM's last double-overtime victory came in the 2018 season finale at Stanislaus State.
  • The combined shot total of 48 was the most ever in a CSUSM game. It beat out the combined 47 shots in the 2008 season opener against San Diego Christian.
