Cougars' Season Comes to a Close at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team's 2019 season came to an end as it fell in both games of its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 9-4 at Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
 
GAME 1: CSUSM 1 – CPP 5
 
TOP PERFORMERS
Anthony Rodriguez – 2-for-3 | 1 RBI
Jake Rico – 2-for-3 | 1 BB
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CPP took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to left by Brennan McKenzie and an RBI single to short by Nick Peifer.
  • CSUSM's lone run came in the top of the fifth as Joseph Bahna scored on an RBI single to left by Rodriguez.
  • The Broncos went up 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Peifer.
  • CPP wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the seventh as Cesar Lopez hit an RBI single through the right side to score Patrick Vizcaino.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM fell to 23-26 (19-24 CCAA) while CPP improved to 24-25 (22-21 CCAA).
  • The Broncos' Drew Atherton (2-1) earned the win as he struck out two while allowing one run on five hits and a walk in six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Antonacci put the Cougars ahead 2-0 with a two-run double to right center in the top of the second inning to score pinch runner Mike Lopez and Buck.
  • The Broncos evened things up in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles to center by Nick Peifer and Drew Cowley.
  • Diggs hit a solo homer in the top of the third to put CSUSM back on top at 3-2.
  • CPP went up 4-3 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single through the right side by Nic Hernandez and a sacrifice fly to center by Cesar Lopez.
  • A five-run inning by the Broncos in the fourth put CPP up 9-3 after a two-run single and a three-run homer.
  • An RBI groundout by Ott in the top of the seventh scored pinch runner Taylor Greene from third and cut the deficit to 9-4.
