CSUSM Falls in CCAA Opener to No. 4/5 UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game of the 2019-20 season, the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team fell 81-54 to No. 4/5 UC San Diego on Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tritons took their largest lead of the half at 32-13 on an 18-2 run with 5:07 left to play.
  • The Cougars trailed 36-25 at the half as Gil-Fernandez led CSUSM with 10 points and two blocked shots.
  • Of the Cougars' 36 points in the first half, 22 came in the paint.
  • CSUSM shot 41.4% (12-of-29) from the field in the first half while UCSD shot 45.2% (14-of-31) with five 3-pointers.
  • The Cougars cut the deficit to seven points at 38-31 with 17:24 remaining as Brown drained a three to cap a 12-2 run for CSUSM.
  • A 22-4 run by the Tritons gave them a 60-35 lead with 10:10 remaining.
  • UCSD put up its largest lead of the night at 78-46 on a three with 4:02 remaining in the game.
  • The Tritons shot 51.3% (17-of-33) from the field in the second half as the Cougars shot 39.3% (11-of-28).
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM falls to 4-2 (0-1 CCAA) while UCSD improves to 5-0 (1-0 CCAA).
  • The Cougars ended the game shooting 40.4% (23-of-57) while the Tritons shot 48.4% (31-of-64).
  • CSUSM's four blocked shots were its most of the season while Gil-Fernandez tallied three.
