CSUSM, CPP Play to 1-1 Stalemate

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its fourth consecutive double-overtime game, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, CSUSM went up 1-0 in the 52nd minute. Rafael sent a pass over to Meza on the right side. A few yards behind the corner of the box, Meza took a shot that hopped once in front of the keeper before going into the upper right corner of the goal.
  • In the 75th minute, CPP's Jimmie Villalobos took a shot from dead center of the box that was saved by CSUSM keeper Matt Escareno. However, Villalobos followed the rebound to the right side and put it into the lower left corner of the goal off his right foot.
  • In the first overtime, both teams had four shots, but CSUSM had the only two shots on goal, including a shot off the middle of the crossbar by Salazar.
  • Both teams took two shots in the second overtime with one CPP shot saved by Escareno.

  • CSUSM moves to 3-5-2 (1-1-2 CCAA) while CPP goes to 3-3-2 (2-0-1 CCAA).
  • This was the Cougars' fifth double-overtime game of the season, all of which have occurred in the past six games.

  • The Broncos had a large 11-4 advantage on corner kicks.

  • The tie snapped CPP's three-game winning streak against CSUSM, and it was the first stalemate between the Cougars and Broncos since 2015.

  • The Cougars' 26 shots were their second most of the season.
