SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its first game of the new year, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team chalked up a 72-54 win over Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday evening at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM ended the first quarter with an 18-12 lead behind Vermillion's nine points.
- The Cougars were 8-of-18 (44.4%) in the first 10 minutes while the Seawolves were 5-of-13 (38.5%).
- CSUSM put up its largest of the first half at 36-21 thanks to a layup by Buckner.
- At the end of 20 minutes, CSUSM had a 40-28 lead over Sonoma State after shooting 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field compared to the Seawolves' 42.3 percent (11-of-26).
- Vermillion ended the half with a game-leading 13 points and six rebounds while Del Castillo earned four steals.
- The third quarter proved efficient for CSUSM as the team shot a game-high 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the field while holding Sonoma State to 36.4 percent (4-of-11).
- SSU outscored CSUSM for the first time in the game at 13-9 in the fourth quarter.

- The Cougars improve to 8-4 (5-3 CCAA) while the Seawolves fall to 5-7 (3-6 CCAA).
- CSUSM won the battle of the boards, 34-21.
- The Cougars shot a season-best 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field while holding SSU to 44.2 percent (19-43). Â
- CSUSM tied its best free-throw performance of the season, going 10-of-11 (90.9 percent).
- Del Castillo missed out on her first double-double by one point, finishing with nine points and 12 rebounds.
- The Cougars had the advantage with assists (13-6) and steals (11-9) while forcing the Seawolves to commit 18 turnovers.
