Cougars Rally Back in 69-65 Win at Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team collected its second consecutive come-from-behind victory with a 69-65 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win at Stanislaus on Thursday night at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter had five lead changes with CSUSM coming out on top at 16-14 on a 3-pointer by Kelsey Forrester.
  • A 10-0 run by Stanislaus gave the Warriors the lead at 26-23 with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Cougars trailed 37-32 at halftime after shooting 38.5 percent from the field to Stan State's 50.0 percent.
  • A Vermillion layup and free throw after a foul cut the Warrior lead to 48-44 with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Hackson's 3-pointer, followed by a layup, gave the Cougars their first lead in in the second half at 60-58 with 8:03 on the clock.
  • CSUSM opened the fourth quarter on a 8-0 run before the Warriors got a bucket at 5:28.
  • Hackson knocked down a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to put CSUSM up 69-65.
  • CSUSM's defense held the Warriors off from scoring in the final 30 seconds.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • With the win, the Cougars (10-4, 7-3 CCAA) slide into third place by themselves in the CCAA standings. The Warriors fall to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in conference.
  • Vermillion notched her fifth double-double of the season and her third double-double in the last four games.
  • CSUSM tallied 16 points in three of the four quarters and matched Stanislaus' 21 points in the third quarter.
  • Custodio's 17 points matched her season-best set against Cal State L.A. on Dec. 29.
  • Vermillion's 24 points was also a season high and her third time to score 20 or more points in a game.
  • CSUSM had a slight edge in rebounding at 33-29 over the Warriors. 
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars face cross-county rival UC San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 19 in La Jolla. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
