HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the opening frame, the Cougars broke a 2-2 tie with a dump by Aleese Wheaton that sparked a 6-1 run that prompted a Toro timeout. CSUSM kept the momentum going with an immediate ace by freshman Aimee Cortes.
  • The Toros battled back to close the gap at one point (13-12), but CSUSM responded by taking a 17-13 lead before CSUDH took its final timeout of the first set. A Doering kill clinched the first set victory for CSUSM at 25-21.
  • Once again, CSUSM came out strong to begin the second set. The Toros would constantly try to mount a comeback, but CSUSM wouldn't allow them back into the match.
  • CSUDH took its first lead of the match past five points at the 7-6 mark in the third set.
  • Back-to-back aces by Wheaton sparked a come-from-behind victory in the final set.

QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM improves to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in CCAA. The Toros (5-8, 0-5 CCAA) are still searching for their first conference win of 2018.
  • With the win, CSUSM evened the all-time record against the Toros at 4-4.
  • The Cougars handed CSUDH its third consecutive sweep as the Toros dropped three consecutive sets to Cal State Monterey Bay (Sept. 22) and Cal State L.A. (Sept. 15).
  • CSUSM hit an impressive .342 in the third set with 18 kills on 38 attempts and made only five errors.
  • Newcombe collected her sixth double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs.
