SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team opened its 2018 season with two victories that included a five-set thriller and a clean sweep on the first day of the Cougar Classic at The Sports Center.
MATCH 1: CSUSM 3 – POINT LOMA 2 (19-25, 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening stanza was determined when PLNU went on a 5-1 run to break a 9-9 tie.
- The second set was all CSUSM as the Cougars collected a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Grecia Cordero-Barr served up 11 consecutive points to give CSUSM a 21-10 advantage.
- Both teams traded points to begin the third set before the Cougars pulled away with a 4-0 run capped by a Newcombe kill.
- Point Loma came out strong in the fourth set with a .333 hitting percentage, only making four errors and collecting 18 kills
- The Cougars fought off three consecutive PLNU match points with a 5-0 run to earn the victory.
QUICK HITS
- CSUSM recorded a .048 higher hitting percentage than PLNU, out-hitting the Sea Lions 62 to 56 in kills.
- CSUSM career and season block record holder Fortuné notched six blocks in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars never trailed in the first set, cruising to a victory while holding the Crimson Hawks to a .000 hitting percentage.
- CSUSM hit an impressive .400 clip in the second set, recording 15 kills on 30 attempts and making only three errors.
- The third and final set had CSUSM topping its pervious error total with only two for a .364 attack percentage.
QUICK HITS
- The Cougars forced 22 IUP errors while only making 10 in the three sets.
- CSUSM served up seven aces with Cordero-Barr leading the pack with three.
