Cougars Win Series Opener with Walk-off, Split Twinbill Against CSUDH

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sophomore pinch hitter Melody Forstie hit a walk-off single to lift the Cal State San Marcos softball team to a 2-1 eight-inning victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon. The Cougars dropped game two 7-1 to the Toros.

Freshmen Raven LeClair and Jaqlyn Newhouser each tallied three hits on the day to lead the Cougars. Junior Caitlin Vinyard collected the win in game one after striking out five in her eight innings in the circle.

The Cougars and Toros are back in action on Saturday, April 7 with a doubleheader beginning at noon at the CSUSM Softball Field.

GAME 1: CSUSM 2 – CSUDH 1 (8 innings)
With two outs and the bases loaded, Forstie hit a hard line drive up the middle for a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.  LeClair got things started in the inning with a one-out single to right but was out on a fielder's choice by Newhouser. Freshman Kymmie Woken came into run for Newhouser after junior Karen Roman singled up the middle. Junior Kammy Fisher drew a walk after entering the game as a pinch hitter to load the bases.

The Toros took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Chloe Wenger's homer to left field.

CSUSM evened the game in the bottom of the frame at 1-1. Newhouser hit a one-out double to the right corner, advanced to third on Roman's fly out to right and scored on a CSUDH error.

GAME 2: CSUDH 7 – CSUSM 1
CSUDH once again took the lead in the second inning, this time on a 2-RBI single by Rachel Sandoval.

The Cougars cut the Toro lead in half on Newhouser's RBI single that went under the pitcher's glove,  scoring LeClair after she led off the third with a single.

The Toros would spread out five runs over the fifth and sixth innings on four hits and two CSUSM errors.
