Cougars Fall Twice to Concordia-Irvine

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of its nonconference doubleheader to Concordia-Irvine on Wednesday, April 18. The final scores were 5-3 and 5-0.

Junior Rae Camez and freshman Raven LeClair each had two hits on the day.

The Cougars will close out their 2018 campaign on April 27-28 at Cal State San Bernardino.

GAME 1: CUI 5 – CSUSM 3
The Eagles took an early lead on a two-run homer by Amanda Gjertsen.

CSUSM went up 3-2 in the fourth, scoring on two hits and a CUI error. Sophomore Melody Forstie and junior Kammy Fisher drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning. Senior Karla Bernal laid down a sac bunt to advance both runners. A RBI bunt single by senior Sara Langdon scored Forstie. LeClair knocked a RBI single up the middle to score freshman pinch runner Kymmie Woken. Langdon plated on the play after the Eagles misplayed the ball in the outfield, giving CSUSM the lead.

A two-run home run by Amy Ellefson gave the Eagles back the lead at 4-3 in the fifth inning.

CUI got an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Kailey Palazzolo recorded an RBI single on a 14-pitch at-bat.

GAME 2: CUI 5 – CSUSM 0
The Eagles scattered their five runs over three innings. Their first two runs came in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt.

CUI extended its lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

The Eagles final two runs came on back-to-back RBI doubles by Palazzolo and Michelle Lieng.

The Cougars' best chance came in their final at-bat after Forstie led off with a single through the right side and Langdon drew a two-out walk. CUI's starting pitcher Jordan Quinn forced a fly out to end the game.
