SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to Chico State, 11-7 and 10-4.
Juniors
Austin Ott and
Cabot Van Til each had four hits and four RBIs on the day. Ott knocked out a home run in each of the games while Van Til tallied a double, triple and a home run in the doubleheader.
The CSUSM-Chico State series finale is slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 15.
GAME 1: Chico State 11 – CSUSM 7
CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the third. Van Til knocked a RBI double to the right center hole to score junior
Adam Tanoue, who reached on a chopper to first that stayed in no man's land.
The Wildcats scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth, but CSUSM evened the game in the bottom of the frame at 3-3. Juniors
Marcus Wilhite and
Justin Mellano hit back-to-back two-out singles. Wilhite plated on Tanoue's Texas Leaguer to left center and Mellano followed on junior
Näshéa Diggs' double down the left line.
Chico State scattered four runs on five hits in the fifth and sixth innings to take 7-3 lead.
CSUSM closed the gap to one run on Van Til's three-run homer to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Wildcats once again answered with a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to make it 11-6.
Ott's first opposite-field home run of the day came in the bottom of the ninth.
GAME 2: Chico State 10 – CSUSM 4
Chico State jumped out first on Louie Canjura's solo homer in the first inning.
CSUSM knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Van Til led off with a single and scored on Ott's RBI single through the right side that hugged the ground all the way to the outfield.
The Wildcat's offense exploded with seven runs over the next three innings to take a 8-1 lead.
After Ott's homer in the fourth, Van Til led off the fifth with a stand-up triple to the warning track of right center. He scored on Place's double down the left line. Ott's bouncing single up the middle brought Place across the plate to make it 8-4.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the sixth that included an Adam DeVito home run.
