SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team swept its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 4-2.
Junior
Caitlin Vinyard (6-14) allowed just two hits in her complete game outing, walking two and fanning one in the contest. Junior
Skie Munoz (4-8) also tossed a complete game, allowing only two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out two.
Sophomore
Karen Roman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and classmate
Abby Callais tallied three RBIs on the day.
Prior to tomorrow's 11 a.m. doubleheader, there will be a Senior Day presentation honoring CSUSM's three seniors
Karla Bernal,
Lindsay Cerulle and
Sara Langdon.
GAME 1: CSUSM 4 – CSUEB 0
All four CSUSM runs came in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Melody Forstie led off the inning with a single through the right side. She later scored on back-to-back fielder's choices by junior
Kat Calderon and senior
Karla Bernal. Calderon scored on a safety squeeze by freshman pinch hitter
Jaqlyn Newhouser. Freshman
Raven LeClair knocked out an RBI single to shallow left center field. Senior
Lindsay Cerulle followed with a RBI single to the right field corner.
The Pioneers' two hits came in the first two innings as Vinyard retired the side in order three times in the game.
GAME 2: CSUSM 4 – CSUEB 2
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on Roman's two-out RBI single to shallow right field.
Callais' single took a weird bounce past the Pioneer shortstop and scored two runs to extend CSUSM lead to 3-0 in the second.
Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Raimrez and Fukushima gave CSUEB its first runs of the day, closing the CSUSM lead to 3-2.
CSUSM got an insurance run in the fourth on a sac fly by Callais after Cerulle drew a lead off walk.
