SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team recorded a 5-0 shutout victory in the nightcap to earn a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) split against visiting Sonoma State on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The Cougars dropped game one 4-2.
Junior
Cabot Van Til led the Cougars, going 5-for-6 with three runs and an RBI. He crushed his third home run of the season in game one. Junior
Marcus Wilhite tallied four hits, scoring twice for CSUSM.
The Cougars are back in action again on Saturday, March 17 with a single game starting at 3 p.m.
GAME 1: SSU 4 – CSUSM 2
The Seawolves pushed two runs across to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth, scoring on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
SSU's first two runs came on sac flies in the third and fourth innings. Van Til's homer in the third and a ground out in the seventh inning evened the game each time for the Cougars.
CSUSM starter
Taylor Greene went 7.2 innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits and fanned five. Junior
Austin Ott took the loss after coming in for relief in the ninth inning from center field.
SSU's Nicolas Vega (2-0) clinched the win after two innings of work and Grant St. Martin picked up his second save of the season.
GAME 2: CSUSM 5 – SSU 0
The Cougars offense came alive in the odd innings while freshman
Michael Lopez tossed a seven-inning complete shutout.
The Cougars took advantage of an SSU error to take a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
Senior
Tyler Place led off the third inning with a double down the left line and later scored on Wilhite's line drive single to left center. Junior
Isaias Torres hit a blooper to shallow left center to bring Wilhite home and make it 3-0.

Aidan Stinnett to begin the fifth inning extended CSUSM's lead to 4-0. Junior
Justin Mellano sent the ball to the deep right corner for the fourth sac fly of the day.
Lopez (1-1) struck out four batters and gave up seven hits for his first collegiate win. SSU's Michael Warning (1-1) took the loss after three innings on the hill.
