Cougars Sweep Doubleheader At Concordia Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team took both games of Saturday's nonconference doubleheader at Concordia Irvine by scores of 2-1 and 9-5.

CSUSM improves to 2-1 on the season while the Eagles will fall to 1-2 following the loss.
 
Junior Cabot Van Till went 4-for-7 including a home run, two RBIs, two runs and a double in the two games. Classmate Troy Lamparello, making his Cougar debut, went 7.2 innings in game one giving up no runs, two hits and striking out eight for his first win of the year.
 
The Cougars will have two weeks off before the first home game of 2018 as they will host Concordia-Portland in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 17. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free CSUSM water bottle.
 
GAME 1: CSUSM 2 – CUI 1
In a classic pitcher's duel, CSUSM and CUI went seven scoreless innings before junior Marcus Wilhite hit his second home run in as many days with a solo shot to deep right field to make it 1-0 in favor of CSUSM in the top of the eighth inning.
 
The Cougars would eventually add a big insurance run in the ninth inning. Van Till led off with a double and was later brought around to score on a sacrifice fly from junior Austin Ott to make it 2-0 CSUSM.
 
The Eagles would answer with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the tying run aboard before CSUSM junior reliever Brandon Bachman was able to record the final out and earn his first save of the season.
 
GAME 2: CSUSM 9 – CUI 5
Ignited by a a close win in game one, CSUSM came out firing in game two and found themselves leading 6-2 after the first three innings.
 
The Cougars would add another run in the fifth inning before the Eagles would put up a three spot to make it just a two-run score, 7-5, in favor of CSUSM.
 
A home run from Van Till in the seventh inning, his first as a Cougar, made it 9-5 and that would be all CSUSM would need.
 
Van Till, junior Isaias Torres and freshman Joseph Bahna all tally two hits in the game.
 
CSUSM junior starter Taylor Greene, making his first start in a Cougar uniform, collected the win after going 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking just one.
 
CSUSM relievers, junior Brady Corson, junior Brennan Piceno and freshman Michael Lopez, combined to go 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball to shut the door out of the bullpen.
