LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at No. 24 UC San Diego by scores of 12-1 and 7-5.
Freshman
Raven LeClair went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two runs on the day. Senior
Sara Langdon and
Kat Calderon each tallied two hits in the twinbill.
The Cougars fall to 2-12 overall, 1-11 in CCAA play while the Tritons move up to 13-4, 8-4 in conference action.
CSUSM returns home to host Humboldt State in a CCAA doubleheader on Friday, March 2 at 12 p.m.
GAME 1: UCSD 12 - CSUSM 1 (5 inn.)
A sacrifice fly by Kelsi Maday put the Tritons up 1-0 in the first inning. CSUSM responded quickly by taking advantage of a UCSD error to even the game at 1-1 in the second frame.
UCSD posted six runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth inning to end the game at 12-1 after five innings.
CSUSM committed six errors in the game and only three of UCSD's 12 runs were earned.
GAME 2: UCSD 7 – CSUSM 5
LeClair drew a walk to begin the nightcap and later came around to score on freshman Jaclyn Newhouser's single through the right side to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars doubled their lead in the top of the second on Langdon's sacrifice bunt to third that scored senior
Karla Bernal after she reached on a UCSD error to begin the inning.
UCSD scored when Maday was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third. CSUSM got out of the Triton rally with a double play to end the inning.
The Tritons made it a 7-2 ballgame after scoring four runs in the fifth inning followed by two more in the sixth that included a Brittney Aguirre solo home run.
CSUSM put together a seventh inning rally, scoring three runs on three hits, two wild pitches and a UCSD error.
