SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team took game one of Friday's doubleheader, 6-4, before falling 8-7 despite a seventh-inning rally to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.
The Cougars (3-13, 2-12 CCAA) were led by sophomore
Abby Callais' 5-for-6 performance, tallying two doubles, a run and an RBI in her first twinbill of 2018. Juniors
Rae Camez and
Kammy Fisher along with freshman
Raven LeClair each tallied four hits on the day. Junior
Caitlin Vinyard (2-5) tossed an eight-hit, four run complete game to pick up the win in the doubleheader opener.
CSUSM and HSU (8-9, 6-6 CCAA) will conclude its four-game series on Saturday, March 3 in a twinbill beginning at 11 a.m. at CSUSM Softball Field.
GAME 1: CSUSM 6 – HSU 4
CSUSM got on the board first after LeClair hit a leadoff double and later scored on junior
Kat Calderon's bunt single in the opening frame.
The Jacks took the lead away with two runs in the top of the second, highlighted by Rylie Carlier's solo homer to center field.
HSU extended its lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, but CSUSM retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Camez began the inning with a single up the middle and scored on freshman
Janaea Mason's double off the right center field wall. Callais lined a 2 RBI double to left center to make it 4-3.
A sacrifice fly by HSU's D'Angel Zavala evened the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
The Cougars scored two runs in their half of the frame on a wild pitch and a passed ball to clinch the win.
Callais went 4-for-4 with an RBI as CSUSM outhit HSU 13-8.
GAME 2: HSU 8 – CSUSM 7
HSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 3.5 innings on Harris' RBI triple and a three-run homer in addition to Carlier's RBI single and two-run homer.
The Cougars pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth on singles by senior
Karla Bernal and LeClair.
The Jacks added one more run in the top of the fifth on Winona Vigil's RBI double to left center to make it 8-2.
Newhouser's RBI double down the right field line cut the gap to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
With a never-give up attitude, CSUSM put together a seventh-inning rally. Camez led off with a hard single to the pitcher and scored on Mason's double to right center. A Newhouser single up the middle put runners at the corners. Fisher followed with an RBI single and pinch hitter
Melody Forstie's singled to load the bases. LeClair's single through the left side plated Fisher and Forsite to make it 8-7.
HSU's Jasmine Hill halted the rally with a strikeout and forced CSUSM to settle for a doubleheader split.
