This Week in Cougar Athletics: Feb. 19-25

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's basketball teams conclude the 2018 regular season schedule with a pair of home games this week including Senior Night on Saturday, Feb. 24. The CSUSM men's and women's track & field teams host the Mangrum Invitational on Saturday beginning at noon. The Cougars' baseball team opens California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a four-game split-venue series with Cal Poly Pomona and the CSUSM softball team faces UC San Diego in a four-game series in La Jolla.

CAL STATE L.A.
  • CSUSM is 1-5 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
  • The Cougars fell to the Golden Eagles, 52-46, on Dec. 19 at the Eagles Nest. Senior Raegan Lillie notched a season-high 17 points, going 7-of-13 from the field.
  • The Golden Eagles are tied for third in the CCAA standings with Humboldt State and have already clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament (Feb. 27 – March 3). They are fighting for the opportunity to host the opening round game.
  • Senior Rikke Fabricius ranks in the top 10 in the CCAA in points (14.3 ppg, 9th), rebounds (9.4 rpg, 5th) and blocked shots (0.8 bpg, 10th).

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
  • CSUSM is 1-5 all-time against the Toros.
  • The Cougars dropped a 75-56 decision to CSUDH on Dec. 17 in the Torodome. The Toros went to the line 26 times, making 24 which proved to be the difference in the game.
  • Seventh in the CCAA standings, the Toros are vying for spot in the CCAA tournament.
  • CSUDH's Taylor Farris is the CCAA leader and ranks 31st in the NCAA with 61 blocked shots, averaging 2.4 per game.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars dropped three CCAA games this past week, dropping a 77-51 decision to Cal Poly Pomona before falling to visiting Cal State San Bernardino (73-66) and CPP (72-68) at The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM continues to fight for a spot in the eight-team CCAA basketball tournament. The Cougars are tied for tenth place with Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM ranks 29th in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a 27.5 percentage.

CAL STATE L.A.
  • The Cougars are 2-2 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
  • Earlier this season, CSUSM defeated CSULA, 83-78, at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles. Senior Joe Boyd recorded a double-double in the game with 16 points and 19 rebounds while junior Bear Henderson scored a game-high 20 points.
  • CSULA has won three of its last four games but is coming off an 81-69 nonconference loss to Concordia Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 17.
  • Garrett Carter is the team's leading scorer at 13.0 points per game. CSULA leads the CCAA in 3-pointers per game (9.8) and blocked shots (3.54) while is second in scoring (77.4).
 
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
  • CSUSM is 3-2 all time over the Toros.
  • In a balanced effort with five Cougars scoring in double-digits, CSUSM defeated CSUDH, 93-77, on Dec. 17, 2017 in the Torodome. Senior Ethan Alvano scored a team-high 34 points to go with six assists and six steals while CSUSM shot 52.5 percent from the field for the game. The Toros' Deshay Gipson scored a game-high 42 points.
  • CSUDH has won four of its last five games including a 78-74 home win over Stanislaus State on Saturday, Feb. 17.
  • Jonathan Nichols leads the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game. Malcom Johnson ranks second in the CCAA in rebounding with 9.1 boards per game while as a team the Toros are tied for first in the conference in defensive rebounds per game (27.0).
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • CSUSM went 1-1 on the road last week in CCAA play. The Cougars defeated Humboldt State, 74-70, on Thursday before falling to Chico State, 71-63, on Saturday at Acker Gymnasium.
  • The Cougars continue to pace the top of the conference in scoring (79.8), 3-point field goal percentage (39.5), free throw percentage (75.1) and assists/turnover ratio (1.37).
  • Senior Ethan Alvano leads the CCAA in points per game (20.8), assists (5.8), steals (2.4) and minutes (35.6) while classmate Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounds per game with 9.3. Senior Josh Spiers is second in the CCAA in 3-point field goals per game (2.8).
  • The Cougars have punched their ticket to the CCAA tournament for the first time in program history. They will host the first round of the conference tournament at The Sports Center on Tuesday, Feb. 27 with a time and opponent TBD.
  • CSUSM is currently tied with crosstown rival, UC San Diego for third place in the CCAA standings.

CAL POLY POMONA
  • The Cougars are 0-8 all-time against the Broncos.
  • CPP is coming off a 3-1 win over Concordia Irvine on Friday, Feb. 16 but has lost three of its last four games.
  • Nic Hernandez leads the team in multiple categories offensively including hits (11), doubles (3), RBIs (5), total bases (17), runs (5) and batting average (.478).
  • As a team, the Broncos rank seventh in the CCAA in batting (.266) and fifth in pitching (4.17).
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars went 3-0 this past weekend with a sweep over Concordia Portland at home. The scores were 6-1 and 8-4 on Saturday and 7-1 on Sunday.
  • Senior Tyler Place finished 7-for-10 with six runs, two doubles, three RBIs, 15 total bases, two walks and a pair of home runs in the three games. Juniors Domenic Antonacci, Austin Ott, Isaias Torres, Marcus Wilhite and Cabot Van Til all homered in the series.
  • Junior starting pitchers Mike Lopez (1-0), Taylor Greene (2-0) and Troy Lamparello (2-0) each earned wins while they combined to give up just six runs on 15 hits while striking out 13 batters in 19.0 IP.
  • CSUSM ranks second in the CCAA in batting (.316 AVG) and fourth in pitching (3.86 ERA). The Cougars are currently No. 10 in the first week of the NCBWA West Region Rankings.

UC San Diego
  • CSUSM is 1-7 all-time against the Tritons.
  • The Cougars dropped all four games last season at UCSD by scores of 5-1, 8-3, 9-2 and 4-3.
  • In the last two weeks, the Tritons have split back-to-back CCAA series to Humboldt State and Sonoma State.
  • Chico State was picked to finish sixth in the 2018 CCAA Softball preseason coaches poll.

  • The Cougars dropped its four-game series at No. 21 Chico State last weekend by scores of 3-0, 4-0, 4-0 and 7-1.
  • Freshman Jaqlyn Newhouser is No. 5 in the CCAA with a .440 batting average after going 11-for-25 in the first 10 games.
  • Freshman Raven LeClair is batting .320 (8-for-25) with four RBIs and three runs. 
  • In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.
