CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team was held scoreless in both ends of its doubleheader at No. 21 Chico State, 3-0 and 4-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon.
Freshmen
Raven LeClair and
Jaqlyn Newhouser tallied two hits apiece as CSUSM finished the day with seven hits and five walks. CSUSM drops to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference action. Chico improves to 11-0 overall, 6-0 CCAA.
CSUSM and Chico State will close out its four-game series on Saturday, Feb. 17 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Wildcat Softball Field.
GAME 1: Chico State 3 – CSUSM 0
After three scoreless innings, the Wildcats put up one run in the bottom of the fourth on a Claire Wayne RBI single that scored Akins who reached on an error to begin the inning.
A two-run homer by Bailey Akins, her fifth in 10 games, in the fifth inning extended Chico State's lead to 3-0.
Junior
Caitlin Vinyard (1-2) relinquished three runs, two earned, on six hits and walked four. Chico State's Haley Gilham (6-0) earned the win after allowing two hits and struck out nine in seven shutout innings.
GAME 2: Chico State 4 – CSUSM 0
Three of Chico State's four runs were unearned as CSUSM tallied four errors in the nightcap.
The Wildcats pushed a run across in the first, capitalizing on two Cougar errors on one play.
In the third, Karli Skowrup hit 2-RBI homer to make it 2-0 Chico State.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the fifth inning.
CSUSM's best chance to score a run came in the top of the fifth. Senior
Karla Bernal reached first on a fielder's choice after freshman
Aliya Machrone hit a leadoff single. Senior
Sara Langdon laid down a bunt single to third base as Bernal moved 60 feet. Both runners advanced into scoring position on
Rae Camez's sacrifice bunt, but Chico State's Naomi Monahan (3-0) ended the inning on a fly out to left field.
Karen Roman (0-1) went six innings, giving up only one earned run on four hits and struck out two.
