Akayla Hackson sunk a pair of free throws with six seconds to secure the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team a 71-69 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory over Humboldt State on Thursday night at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second consecutive game, the Cougars found themselves trailing (17-15) after the first 10 minutes.
- A layup by Vermillion evened the game at 33-33 with 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Two made free throws by Alexia Thrower gave the Jacks a two-point lead at the break.
- The teams had a see-saw battle to begin the second half as CSUSM took a 46-44 lead into the media timeout at 3:01.
- A steal and fast break by Hackson extended CSUSM's lead to 49-44 with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.
- Back-to-back layups by Olsen and Buckner gave CSUSM a 55-52 lead at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter.
- A pair of Vermillion free throws gave the Cougars a 65-62 lead with 37 seconds remaining.
- After a timeout, a HSU turnover after stepping out of bounds with 36.6 remaining in the game gave the Cougars the ball.
- Custodio made both ends of her free throws to make it 67-62 in the final 30 seconds.
- HSU's Isamar Conde sunk a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game (67-65) with 29 seconds on the clock.
- The Jacks tied the game at 69-69 with nine seconds remaining on two made free throws by Madeline Hatch.
- After Hackson's two made free throws, CSUSM's defense stopped two HSU shots to clinch the win.

- The Cougars improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference while the Jacks fell to 3-2 (1-1 CCAA).
- This was the first time this season that the Cougars had five scorers in double-digits.
- CSUSM shot 45.3 percent from the field to HSU's 42.4 percent.
- The Cougars went to the free throw line 26 times, making 19, while the Jacks went 8-of-10.
- HSU outrebounded the Cougars, 37-35.
- HSU's largest lead of 21-15 came in the second quarter with 7:44 on the clock.Â
