SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Senior
Savannah Camp's old-fashioned 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team to a 63-61 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory on Thursday night at The Sports Center.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-7 in conference play (6-11 overall). The Seawolves drop to 8-10 on the season and 5-9 in CCAA action.
Camp finished with a game-high 20 points, just narrowly missing a double-double after collecting nine rebounds. Senior
Lupe Cruz notched her second double-double of the season with her season-best 17 points in addition to pulling down 10 boards. Junior
Juliet Jones added 13 points and three assists.
Down a majority of the first quarter, Camp's 3-pointer put CSUSM up 12-11. The Cougars led throughout the whole second quarter and took a 23-21 lead into the break.
Another old-fashioned 3-point play, this time by Cruz, gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night at 45-36 with 6:23 left in regulation.
From that point, the Seawolves put together a 19-10 run capped by 3-pointer by Carly Gill with eight seconds on the clock to push the game into overtime at 55-55.
CSUSM got off to a slow start in overtime but made up for it with an 8-2 run to clinch the victory.
Madison Burroughs led SSU's offense with 18 points.
The Cougars take to the road next week, traveling to San Francisco State on Friday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
