La Mirada, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team fell to Biola, 2-0, in a nonconference match on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Al Barbour Field in La Mirada, Calif.
Two goals in less than a minute were the difference for Biola over CSUSM. Samantha Verduzco and Annmarie Alvarez both scored in the 31st minute and that's all BU would need to hold off the Cougars.
CSUSM falls to 2-2 on the season as Biola remains perfect at 3-0 following the win.
The Cougars outshot Biola 19-12 for the match including 10 in the second half. Senior
Kayla Anderson led the team with six shots. Sophomores
Caitlin Gharibeh and
Lauren Perry also finished with multiple shots, four and three, respectively.
Verduzco was assisted by Hali Oakes as she was able to receive a long ball played in behind the San Marcos defense to beat sophomore goalkeeper
Bailey Cockrill to put Biola ahead 1-0. Roughly just 30 seconds later, it was Oakes with the assist again. This time she was able to pass it over the center line, finding Alvarez who was able to put it away for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0.
CSUSM would have their chances but ultimately came up short as they finished with 19 shots but just two on goal.
The Cougars will return home on Friday, Sept. 15 as they welcome Stanislaus State to The Cage for the CCAA opener. Match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
