SAN MARCOS, Calif. - In the conference opener, the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team defeated Stanislaus State, 1-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday, Sept. 15 at The Cage in San Marcos.
In the 34th minute, sophomore
Madyson Brown lined up to take a corner kick for CSUSM. Initially it was first touched by senior forward
Kayla Anderson before junior
Megan Pfrunder was able to work through a congested box and finish to the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Cougars. Anderson and Brown were both given assists on the play while Pfrunder gets credit for her team leading second goal of the season.
With the win, CSUSM improves to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in CCAA play. Stanislaus State drops its first match of the season and falls to 5-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 in conference action.
The Cougars finished the match with 10 total shots while putting four on goal. Sophomore
Jessica Harloe and freshman
Katie Connor led the way with two shots each. Sophomore goalkeeper
Bailey Cockrill picked up her third shutout of the season while recording three saves in the match.
CSUSM outshot Stanislaus State 10-6 for the match but the Warriors edged the Cougars 4-3 in corner kick chances. CSUSM combined for 21 fouls compared to just nine for Stanislaus State.
The Warriors were efficient with their shooting despite being shut out for the first time all season. They totaled six shots while four of those on being put on goal. Sophomore Rayana Plancarte led Stan. St. with two shots in the match.
The Cougars will welcome CCAA opponent Chico State to The Cage on Sunday, Sept. 17. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
