Cougars Blanked in First Road Match of 2017

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Competing in triple-digit temperatures, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team fell to California Baptist, 7-0, in a nonconference road match on Saturday, Sept. 2 in Riverside.

Cal Baptist improves to 2-0-0 with the win while CSUSM drops to 1-1-0 on the season.

It took CBU just 90 seconds to score their first goal of the match. Aidan Apodaca got behind the CSUSM defense to score from the right side to put CBU ahead 1-0. It was the first of four goals on the day for Apodaca, tying a CBU single game record for most goals scored in a match.

CBU outshot CSUSM 22-to-9 for the match, with 14 of those 22 shots being on goal for the Lancers.

Senior Victor Gonzalez led CSUSM with three shots, putting one on goal. The Cougars had their best chance to score in the ninth minute on a header inside the box by Victor Gonzalez that was tipped over the cross bar for a near miss.

Following the near miss from Gonzalez, the Lancers answered right back, scoring their second goal just three minutes later. A cross whipped into the 18-yard box found Junior Guerra on the other end, earning his first goal of the season and making it 2-0 CBU just 12 minutes into the match. That was all the Lancers would need as they took a 4-0 lead into halftime before tacking on three more goals in the second half.

CBU combined to have four different goal scorers on the day. Apodaca led the way with four goals on seven shots. Sebastian Wiesboeck, Joey Chica and Guerra each finished with a goal apiece. CBU keeper Edgar Benitez made two saves and record his second clean sheet of the young season. Including exhibition matches, CBU has now outscored their opponents, 23-0 in just four matches.

CSUSM returns home Wednesday, Sept. 6 to resume its nonconference schedule with a matchup against Hope International at 4 p.m. at The Cage.
