Late Goal Ends in Draw for CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team relinquished a last minute goal in regulation and had to settle for a tie with Hope International, 2-2, in nonconference action on Wednesday afternoon at The Cage.
 
CSUSM led on two different occasions with the Royals evening the score both times. An eventual scoreless overtime gave the Cougars its first tie of the season.
 
CSUSM moves to 1-1-1 following the draw as the Royals will leave San Marcos with a 4-0-1 record.
 
Junior Bryan Morrison got the Cougars on the board first with a penalty kick goal in the 13th minute, his first goal of the season. However, roughly 12 minutes later the equalizer came on another penalty kick, this time from HIU's John Mejia, his second goal of the year.
 
Just before halftime in the 43rd minute, junior Issac Swenson connected off a rebound in front of the net and finished to the right side to put CSUSM ahead 2-1, It was Swenson's his first goal of 2017. Senior Victor Gonzalez and sophomore Eric Poland were credited with the assists.
 
As CSUSM did in the first half, it was the Royals turn to return the favor with a late goal of their own. With three minutes remaining in regulation, HIU's Pedro Mendoza scored on a cross from Steven Mendoza on the right side and tapped it under the diving CSUSM goalkeeper, sophomore Alex Franklin to tie the score at 2-2.
 
Hope International totaled seven shots in the second half including the equalizer in the 87th minute scored by Pedro Mendoza, his seventh goal of the year.
 
Despite four shots apiece, each team was held scoreless in the two 10-minute overtime sudden victory halves.
 
CSUSM outshot HIU for the match 18-15 and Franklin made six saves.
 
The Cougars will play one final nonconference match on the road against Biola, Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. before starting CCAA action at home on Sept. 15.
