SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team earned its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series victory of 2017 after recording a 10-0 win over Stanislaus State in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The Cougars fell in game two 10-7 to the Warriors.
The Cougars (15-19, 5-17 CCAA) earned a 7-2 victory over Stan State (21-14, 11-13 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Taylor Ahearn tossed a complete game shutout in the twinbill opener to collect his second win on the weekend. He recorded six strikeouts and walked none in the contest.
Freshman
Griffin Teisher hit his first collegiate home run, making CSUSM history with an inside-the-park grand slam which was a program first.
Junior
Colin Dvorak went 5-for-8 (.625) with four runs and a RBI to lead CSUSM's offense.
The Cougars play a four-game split-venue conference series next week, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday before traveling to Carson for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
GAME 1: CSUSM 10 – Stan State 0
The first five innings were a pitching duel between Ahearn and Stan State's Stewart Alexander until the CSUSM offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior shortstop
Tyler Place reached on an error to begin the sixth frame and advanced 90 feet on Dvorak's single through the left side. After sophomore catcher
Isaias Torres drew a walk to load the bases, freshman designated hitter
Kevin Britt singled down the left line to plate Place and put CSUSM on the board at 1-0. Dvorak later scored on a fielder's choice by freshman outfielder
Reed LaBar to make it 2-0. Sophomore first baseman
Mark Van Skike was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again. Teisher crushed the ball to left field to clear the bases and beat out the throw for an inside-the-park home run to raise CSUSM's lead to 6-0.
The Cougars added four more runs on two hits and two Warrior errors in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ahearn faced no more than four batters an inning while seeing the minimum for three innings.
Teisher went 2-for-3 with a season-best five RBIs and a run.
Alexander took the loss after 5.2 innings of work, six runs (none earned) in the contest.
GAME 2: Stan State 10 – CSUSM 7
The series finale consisted of three tied scores before the Warriors took the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Gino Franceschett hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to give Stan State an 8-7 lead.
The Warriors scored two insurance runs that included an Austin Fitzpatrick homer in the top of the ninth to prevent a CSUSM sweep.
After being shutout in game one, Stan State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two walks, two wild pitches and a triple by Kert Woods.
CSUSM answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Place hit a one-out double to left center and advanced to third on Dvorak's single up the middle. Torres hit a RBI single to left to score Place and both runners scored on Van Skike's double to right center.
The Cougars took their first lead of the nightcap in the third inning. Place and Dvorak hit back-to-back singles and scored on Torres' single through the left side to take a 5-3 lead.
The Warriors evened the game in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.
CSUSM took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the frame on another RBI double by Van Skike and LaBar's RBI single up the middle.
Senior
Hayden Weir took the loss after 1.1 innings of work, relinquishing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Stan State's Robbie Devries collected the win after three innings and Nick Volmard registered his CCAA-leading ninth save of the season.
