SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon by scores of 14-7 and 8-4.
The Cougars fall to 16-29 overall and 6-27 in conference action. The Coyotes improve to 13-32 on the season and 10-23 in CCAA play.
Freshmen outfielders
Jose Osete and
Griffin Teisher each tallied four hits on the day. Sophomore
Mark Van Skike and Osete both recorded their first home runs of the season while Teisher notched his second. Teisher's first was an in-the-park homer against Stanislaus State on April 9.
The Cougars will attempt to even the series against the Coyotes on Sunday, April 30 in San Marcos. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
GAME 1: CSUSB 14 – CSUSM 7
The Coyotes jumped out early, spreading out nine runs on 10 hits in the first four innings.
CSUSM got on the board in the top of the third on junior shortstop
Riley Manquen's RBI single that drove in senior designated hitter
Ross Lemmel who reached on a one-out double to left field.
CSUSM's second run came in the fourth inning when Lemmel drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-2.
In the top of the sixth, the Cougars closed the gap to 9-5 with three runs. Van Skike led off with a double up the middle before Osete turned on the ball that everyone knew was gone as soon as he made contact. CSUSM's final run came on a Coyote error.
The Coyotes made it 14-5 with two runs off Dominic Campeau's 2-RBI single in the bottom of the frame and three more in the seventh that was highlighted by Dillon Fahr's RBI triple and a Lucas Martinez solo home run.
CSUSM attempted a comeback with back-to-back home runs in the ninth. Van Skike hit a one-out towering ball that cleared the left field fence and Teisher followed with a laser shot down the right field line.
Junior
Andy Garretson (2-3) took the loss after going 2.2 innings and giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits. Jon Ferrendelli (2-4) collected the win after a five-strikeout performance that went 5.2 innings.
GAME 2: CSUSB 8 – CSUSM 4 (7 innings)
Once again the Coyotes took the lead first on Jordan Simon's 2-RBI double in the first before taking advantage of a CSUSM error in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars evened the game in the top of the fifth. Manquen drew a leadoff walk and advanced 90 feet on freshman third baseman
Riley Froom's single through the left side. Singles by Osete and Garretson scored Manquen and Froom, respectively. CSUSM's final run came on a first and third rundown before the third out was called.
CSUSM took its first lead of the day in the top of the sixth by taking advantage of a wild pitch that Lemmel scored on after getting on base on a two-out single.
The Cougars' lead was short lived as the Coyotes put up five runs on five hits and two CSUSM errors in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-4.
Senior
Hayden Weir (2-6) collected the loss after relinquishing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings on the hill. CSUSB's Cory Peterson (1-2) earned the win after recording a strikeout in the sixth inning.
