SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's track & field team will close out the regular season at the adidas/
Steve Scott Invitational, the namesake event for legendary CSUSM head coach
Steve Scott, on Saturday, April 29 at UC Irvine.
Coach Scott was a six-time All-American in cross country and track & field for the Anteaters and
won the 1500m title at the 1978 NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a time of 3:37.58. Scott still holds the
school record in the 1500m with a time of 3:36.1 set in 1977, while his 800m mark of 1:47.6, set in 1978, ranks second in UC Irvine history.

The Cougars at a Glance – Triton Invitational Recap
- The Cougars scored 36 points to tie for fifth-place.
- Freshmen Allison Mojica (400H), Kylene Shuler (long jump) and Alicia Villarreal (800m) qualified for their first events in the CCAA Championships.
- Lisa Flora ran a CCAA qualifier in the 800m, after previously qualifying in the 1500m.
- Devony Dettman placed 10th in the 100H, posting the fourth-fastest time in the CCAA this year.
- With the addition of the three freshman qualifiers last week, 28 Cougars are now eligible for this year's CCAA Championships:
- Twelve Cougars recorded personal bests at the Triton Invitational.
Rodriguez Honored as CSUSM March Co-Female Student-Athlete of the Month
- Natalie Rodriguez earned her second CSUSM Female Student-Athlete of the Month nod of the academic year, having previously won in September 2016 for her accomplishments during the cross country season.
- On March 18, Rodriguez finished second in the 800 at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Invitational with a time of 2:15.84.
- At the Aztec Invitational on March 24, Rodriguez finished third in the 800m (2:15.15) and 1500m (4:44.28).
- Rodriguez shares the March 2017 honor with Bergan Benedict of the women's golf team.
Pettit Named CCAA Field Athlete of the Week
- Danielle Pettit cleared 3.42m in the pole vault at the Aztec Invitational to qualify for the CCAA Championships and earn CCAA Track Athlete of the Week honors for March 20-26.
- The height is the sixth-highest in the CCAA this year.
- The mark is the second-best in CSUSM history and the highest since the school record of 3.70m (Calah Ayer) was established in 2014.
- Pettit is the first member of the Cal State San Marcos women's track & field team to earn the distinction.
CSUSM Begins Final Year of NCAA Division II Transition
The Cougars enter their final year of the NCAA Division II transition process in 2017. Now NCAA DII Provisional Members, CSUSM will compete in NCAA DII and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedules, but will still not be eligible for postseason team competition until 2017.

Steve Scott – The Man, the Myth, the Miler
- Started the CSUSM cross country and track & field programs in the 1999-2000 season.
- Three-time Olympian and was a six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine.
- Inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2002.
- Ran 134 sub-4 minute miles in his illustrious career.
- Has coached six All-CCAA cross country and two All-CCAA track & field student-athletes.
- Coached over 140 NAIA All-Americans and was named NAIA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year three times.
- Selected Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country Coach of the Year 10 times.
