SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to Stanislaus State by scores of 11-0 and 5-2, the former in five innings, Friday at CSUSM Softball Field.
The Cougars fall to 8-34 overall and 7-26 in conference play. The Warriors improve to 22-27 overall and 12-22 in the CCAA.
The two teams will close out the four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. It will be CSUSM's home finale with Senior Day ceremonies prior to the start of the first game.
Game One: Stanislaus State 11, Cal State San Marcos 0 (5 innings)
Stan State outhit CSUSM 12-1 to earn an 11-0 win in five innings. Warrior pitcher Kylie Ragsdale (12-9) earned the win in five innings of work and striking out two in the process. The loss went to senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch (2-15).
The Cougars gave up three runs apiece in the first two innings and five more in the top of the third. CSUSM's only hit came from freshman outfielder
Melody Forstie in the second inning. Junior outfielder
Lindsay Cerulle was able to draw a walk in the bottom of the fourth, but she was retired in the next at bat on a double play.
Game Two: Stanislaus State 5, Cal State San Marcos 2
Stan State compiled nine hits to CSUSM's three and triumphed by a score of 5-2.
Warrior pitcher Kristin Borst (4-6) was credited with the win. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais (2-15) took the loss after throwing all seven innings. Horbasch went 2-for-3 from the plate.
Stan State started strong once again with three runs in the top of the first. The Warriors added two more in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead.
The Cougars were able to cut the margin to three in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Sara Whelehon, who came in to pinch hit, drew a walk and advanced to second on senior infielder
Holly Fauria's bunt single. Whelehon and Fauria advanced one base on a wild pitch and a second consecutive wild pitch brought both of them home to account for the final score.
