No. 5 Humboldt State Takes Three from CSUSM

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games to No. 5 Humboldt State by scores of 5-0, 11-4 and 10-2, the finale going five innings, Friday at McKinleyville High School.
 
CSUSM drops to 8-32 overall and 7-24 in conference play. HSU improves to 32-8 overall and 20-7 in the CCAA.
 
The Cougars will play their final home contests with a four-game series against Stanislaus State on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22.
 
Game One: Humboldt State 5, Cal State San Marcos 0

HSU pitcher Madison Williams threw a no-hitter as CSUSM fell by a final score of 5-0. Williams compiled 12 strikeouts in seven innings. Senior pitcher Amanda Horbasch (4-10) went six innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out five.
 
The Lumberjacks scored three runs in the bottom of the first and one each in the second and sixth innings. The Cougars were only able to get on base three times, two on walks and one on an error.
 
Game Two: Humboldt State 11, Cal State San Marcos 4
After trailing by seven runs, CSUSM tried to make a comeback with four runs, but ultimately fell to HSU 11-4.
 
Lumberjack pitcher Kalyn Paque (14-2) earned the win in six innings of work, giving up three earned runs and striking out two. Senior pitcher Ashley Dagenais was credited with the loss in 1.1 innings of work. Senior infielder Holly Fauria went 3-for-4 with two runs. Horbasch had one hit and three RBI.
 
HSU raced out to an early 7-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the second. The Cougars responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Freshman infielder Karen Roman was walked, freshman infielder Mackenzie Fannin doubled and Fauria singled to load the bases. Junior catcher Heather Rygg drew a walk as Roman came in to score. Horbasch was able to force a Lumberjack error as Fauria was plated.
 
CSUSM got two more runs in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to three. Junior outfielder Sara Langdon and Fauria both singled to occupy first and second. They both touched home plate with a two-run double to left field by Horbasch.
 
HSU thwarted the Cougars' comeback attempt with four insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to ultimately prevail by seven.
 
Game Three: Humboldt State 10, Cal State San Marcos 2 (5 inn.)
Trailing by two runs, CSUSM allowed three runs to HSU, each in the bottom of the third and fifth, to fall 10-2 in five innings.
 
The Lumberjacks' Williams (15-6) did not allow any Cougars hits in four of the five innings she pitched. Dagenais (2-14) took the loss in four frames of work.
 
HSU didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the bottom of the first.
 
CSUSM answered with two runs in the top of the third. Freshman outfielder Melody Forstie singled, advanced to second on Langdon's sacrifice bunt and took third on Fauria's ground out. Junior outfielder Lindsay Cerulle was able to cause an HSU error as Forstie came in. Cerulle took second on a passed ball and reached home on Rygg's RBI single.
 
The Lumberjacks scored three runs apiece in the bottom of the third and fifth to prevail.
