Early Runs Pester Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team fell by a score of 15-13 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Cougars drop to 15-21 overall and 5-19 in conference play. The Toros improve to 11-25 on the season and 8-18  in CCAA action.

Sophomore catcher J.T. Sole led the Cougar offense, going 4-for-4 with three runs, a RBI and a double. Junior second baseman Nico Maida chipped in a 3-for-4 performance with three runs, two RBIs, two walks and a double.

Before they could blink, the Cougars found themselves trailing 7-0 after one and half innings to the Toros.

CSUDH's starting pitcher Nick Suniga walked the first three Cougars to begin the bottom of the first, but CSUSM wasn't able to capitalize and left the bases loaded without pushing a run across.

The Cougars finally scored in the second, putting four runs on the board, but the Toros answered with two more runs in the next frame to make it a 9-4 ballgame.

CSUSM cut the Toros' lead to 9-7 with a three-run fifth inning after putting together four hits and taking advantage of a CSUDH error.

The Toros nabbed another run in the top of the seventh and the Cougars answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth to keep the run difference at two.

CSUDH busted open the game once again with five runs in the top of the ninth that included a 2-RBI triple by Shawn Sweeny and Justin Soteropulos' two-run homer over the left field wall to make it 15-8.

The Cougars attempted a rally, matching CSUDH's five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but fell two runs short of taking the game into extra innings.

The win went to CSUDH's relief pitcher Jacob Musial (1-2) who went 6.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out two. Junior Shawn Hunt (0-2) took the loss after just 0.1 innings of work, relinquishing four runs on four hits and walking two.

The Cougars enter Saturday's doubleheader in Carson down 0-2 in the series against CSUDH. First pitch is slated for noon.
