SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped a pair of games at Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The final scores were 6-2 and 17-2.
The Cougars fall to 10-8 overall and 0-6 in CCAA action. The Otters improve to 11-5 for the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Sophomore catcher
Isaias Torres went 3-for-6 with a double and a RBI.
The Cougars conclude their series with the Otters on Sunday at 11 a.m.
GAME 1: CSUMB 6 – CSUSM 2
The Otters took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on Hayden Duer's RBI double to left center.
Freshman third baseman
Anthony Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to open the fourth inning and later scored on Torres' single to left field to even the game at 1-1. CSUMB made it 3-1 on Zakry Taylor's bases-loaded single up the middle in the bottom of the frame.
The Otters extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth on Max Sanderson's RBI double.
A RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning by junior
Andy Garretson cut the Otter lead to 4-2, but CSUMB responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to secure the win.
Garretson (2-2) took the loss after 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits. CSUMB's Bryan Granger improved to 2-2 on the year after allowing one run in five innings.
GAME 2: CSUMB 17 – CSUSM 2
It was CSUSM's turn to jump out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Junior shortstop
Tyler Place put down a bunt single and scored on Rodriguez's double down the left line. Garretson pushed Rodriguez across the plate on a single to center field.
Late runs haunted Cougars once again as the Otters spread out 17 runs over the final three innings.
Senior
Taylor Ahearn (3-2) took the loss after relinquishing four runs over six innings and struck out six batters. CSUMB's reliever Drew Kozain earned his first win of 2017 after four shutout innings on the mound.
