SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to No. 18 Cal State Monterey Bay, Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Cougars fell 8-0 in five innings in the first game and 4-0 in the second game. The Otters take all four games of the series as they swept the doubleheader on Saturday.
CSUSM drops to 7-22 overall and 6-18 in conference play. CSUMB improves to 23-4 overall and 17-3 in the CCAA.
The Cougars will take a break from conference play to host California Baptist on Friday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
Game One - Cal State Monterey Bay 8, Cal State San Marcos 0 (5 inn.)
CSUSM generated only two hits, gave up two home runs and fell to CSUMB by a score of 8-0 in five innings. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch (4-7) threw two innings and struck out two. Otter pitcher Haley Fein (13-3) went four innings to earn the win.
CSUMB's Janae Coleman hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give her team a 3-0 lead. The Otters got another three-run homer in the third inning, this time by Courtney Hennings. Later in the frame with runners on the corners, CSUSM committed two errors in one play that cleared the bases and brought in two for CSUMB as it went up 8-0.
The Cougars were retired in order in the fourth and fifth innings. CSUSM had a hard time generating offense, with the two hits coming from junior outfielder
Lindsay Cerulle and senior infielder
Holly Fauria.
Game Two - Cal State Monterey Bay 4, Cal State San Marcos 0
CSUMB scored one run in the third inning and three in the six as CSUSM dropped game two by a score of 4-0. Senior pitcher Ashely Dagenais (1-9) went six innings and struck out six. Otter pitcher Rosalia Keirns (6-0) went six innings to earn the win. Horbasch, who played as an infielder, compiled two hits.
CSUMB got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a Julia Garcia RBI single for a one-run lead. The Otters added three more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 4-0. The Cougars got a double from Horbasch to begin the top of the seventh, but struck out in the next three at bats.
