SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team fell twice to Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader by scores of 2-0 and 4-1, Saturday at CSUSM Softball Field. The Seawolves took all four games of the series from the Cougars.
SSU improves its winning streak to 11 games. The Seawolves are now 20-7 overall and 15-5 in conference play. CSUSM drops to 7-16 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA.
The Cougars will play their third conference doubleheader in as many days against Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, March 19 starting at noon. The two games were originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 18, but was postponed due to weather.
Game One - Sonoma State 2, Cal State San Marcos 0
CSUSM did not get its first hit until the fifth inning and fell to SSU by a score of 2-0. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch (4-4) threw all seven innings, giving up two runs and striking out five. Seawolf pitcher Brigid Ruiz (5-3) threw a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
SSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with an RBI double from Madison Barto.
Ruiz was throwing a perfect game until the fifth inning as junior catcher
Heather Rygg laced a single up the middle for the Cougars' first hit. Rygg was later caught stealing as Ruiz faced the minimum through the first five frames.
The Seawolves added an insurance run in the top of the sixth with a homer from Barto.
CSUSM's best chance of scoring came in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt from junior outfielder
Lindsay Cerulle advanced the runners to second and third, but the Cougars could not capitalize on the opportunity.
Game Two - Sonoma State 4, Cal State San Marcos 1
CSUSM compiled eight hits to SSU's six, but dropped the series finale by a score of 4-1.

Sara Langdon went a perfect 2-for-2 in the game. Sophomore infielder
Amanda Lejano collected two hits and the only RBI for the Cougars. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais (1-5) threw the first 2.1 innings and gave up three runs (one earned). Horbasch, who started at first base, came in relief and threw the final 4.2 innings giving up one run. Seawolf pitcher Brielle Vidmar (8-2) collected the win with five strikeouts and no runs given up in four innings. The save went to Teresa Danenberg.
SSU started off hot, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Barto and a sacrifice bunt from Lindsey Calcany Blair. The Seawolves added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead on another RBI sacrifice bunt, this time from Jenn Amaral.
CSUSM scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth. Consecutive singles from senior outfielder
Holly Fauria and Rygg put runners on first and second. A groundout from freshman designated player
Sara Whelehon put Fauria at third and Rygg at second. Lejano scorched a ball up the middle to bring home Fauria as the Cougars avoided a shutout.
SSU added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a homer from Jordann White to account for the final score.
